 After moving back in with her parents  she became a more active member of the resistance movement. She became part of the Raad van Verzet, a resistance movement that happened to have close ties with the communist party. Hannie helped those who were hiding from the german by supplying them with food coupons, stolen identification cards, and distributed resistance newsletters. Also, she carried out attacks on traitors, collaborators and germans. She learned German and got involved with german soldiers, which caused some resistance members to consider her a traitor.

She was caught in possession of a pistol and underground pamphlets at a military checkpoint.
The nazis ignored the agreement with Dutch authorities which stated that they would stop executions. Furthermore, They decided to ignore it after the realization that they have a known resistance member in their custody that was also on their hit list. 3 weeks before the end of the war Hannie was transported to the sand dunes of Bloemendaal by Maarten Kuijper, a dutch detective and a dutch driver along with three german soldiers.

Schmitz walked a few paces and drew and fired his pistol. Hannie cried out in pain but didn't fall from the wound in her head. Hannie said “I could shoot better”. A machine gun was leveled by Kuijper at hannie and he shot her to death. Then she was buried in a shallow grave by Kuijper and the others. When Hannies and many others remains were uncovered she was the one woman out of 422
