Born in Prussia on May 2, 1892 Manfred Von Richtofen later known as the Red Baron was born into an affluent family. He was enrolled into a military school at the age of 11. After 8 years of training he became an officer in the first Ulhan cavalry regiment of the Prussian army. Then in 1915 he transferred to the imperial German Army Air service where he became a pilot. He had a natural talent for flying and he was assigned his first flying combat mission less than 30 hours after learning how to fly. He was the deadliest flying ace of World war I.

The Red Baron's Plane

The Red Fokker Triplane or the Jasta II was the Red Barons most famous and the one where he scored most of his victories. Contrary to popular belief the famous plane was not all red. Instead the plane was painted red with a blue underside. Richtofen ordered for all the Jastas to be painted red on top and light blue underneath. There was no specific reason as to why the Baron chose this red color for the planes, infact in his autobiography he says "For whatever reasons, one fine day I came upon the idea of having my crate painted glaring red. The result was that absolutely everyone could not help but notice my red bird."

Impact on the War

Between 1916 and 1918, the Red Baron single-handedly shot down 80 enemy aircraft. He commanded the fighter pilot group nicknamed the "Flying Circus" because of their highly decorated planes.

He is still considered one of the greatest heroes and a legendary pilot of World War I.

Death of the Red Baron

While on a mission over France to find a British observation aircraft, an enemy fighter pilot chased the Red Baron over into enemy territory. As he was being chased, the red baron flew too close to the ground and passed over an Australian Artillery which opened fire on him. The Red Baron was hit in the torso with a bullet and had just enough strength to land his plane. When the Australian troops showed up at his plane, he was already dead. Even though he was an enemy of the Allied forces, he was still buried with full military honors in Bertangles, France. He died on April 21, 1918, and was only twenty-five years old. His brother, after the war was over, came to take him back to Berlin where he is now buried in Invaliden Cemetery in Germany.
