Technology: AI advancement was said to of been happening in the 80's and this scared people due to the fact that something almost human could be created. This is shown inthe replicants as they look human but have nonhuman minds and intentions, particularly the scene where Deckard is being showed the replicants and his employer (?) is describing how they 'create their own emotions' something that has scared people from AI as if they do create emotions and become 'human' how are we to control them? This is what Pris, Zoya(?) Roy and Leon are examples of, technology gone rogue.

Xenephobia: The rise of Asian culture (and immigration) was apparent in the 80's and caused concern for Americans as fear mongering lead them to believe that Asia had intent to overpower and could do if wanted. This is shown in the world created by Ridley Scott as it is a Asian-western fusion and has many cultural ties that are seemingly 'choke' the landscape, intentional on the directors part to show the xenophobic fears of Americans during this period of time.

Essay

A collection of conventions make up the Dystopian genre, and what makes a Dystopian hero. For example the hero must defy against the government or higher power of the current society and ‘beat the system’, the society must also be a ‘breaking world’, and the text must also explore a specific fear designed to relate with the current target audience to be classified as Dystopian.

Examples

Shown as a hero:

When he saves Rachel “Would you hunt me?..” “No but someone else would”
Long establish shot in the beginning showing a dark world with explosions and fire throughout the city with polluted air and futuristic aircrafts roaming the air.
Government called ‘Tyrell Corp’
“Don't be an asshole Deckard I got four replicants roaming the streets.” - his boss
“I don’t work here anymore.” “stop right where you are.. You’re not cops your little people.” - showing his little power. “No choice huh.” - Deckard.
Elden tyrell.
“It doesn’t even know what it is?” - Deckard.
Lets rachel in his house, “do you want a drink.” “You think I’m a replicant don't you.”
Being an adult, drinking alchohol, not having anyone looking after him.
When he runs after and shoots Pris, shows him going through with the governments orders (NOT A DYSTOPIAN HERO.) "Deckard, you look almost as mad as.." "there is only 3 left" "no four, some girl named Rachael ran off, didn't even know she was a replicant. Tyrell said so." there is a CLOSE UP shot of Deckard's face and he looks worried and defeated that his boss knows about Rachael. (He doesn't want to kill her.)

Deckard is a hero due to his smarts, this sets him apart from all the other main and background characters. He is dressed in dark browns which aren't a common color, the set consists of warm tone so that reflect Deckard whilst all other characters are in color brighter colors setting them apart from him, and making him easily identifiable
