1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature by reading, writing, and analyzing texts to learn from and be inspired by those who have come before us and have had unique experiences worthy of being shared with people across the world and from all walks of life. We study the TTTC because it is a story about the Vietnam War, which is hard for anyone who is not a soldier to comprehend, but O'Brien's style of writing helps the reader to understand the horrors of what the men were going through because they can compare certain situations to that of their own lives. TTTC is a piece of history that needs to be read and understood because the number of survivors of the war is decreasing each year, and soon no one will be left to tell the traumatic events of what really happened, and how the men really felt, in Vietnam.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?

We are affected by literary texts as they evoke emotion, teach one, and may possibly cause readers to compare events in literature to their own lives. We are impacted by TTTC as we are understanding what the men felt in Vietnam and we are taking the lessons of trauma, love, identity, and truth that O'Brien and his men learned the hard way into our own lives so that we don't make the same mistakes as the men of Vietnam, as they allowed the war and the trauma that came with it to consume their lives.

3. How does the structure and style of TTTC affect its meaning?

TTTC is written in a way that is not disgusting or gory or only pertains to veterans. Although it is about a war, readers of all ages and backgrounds can relate to the struggles that the men were dealing with. One is not completely sure of what parts of the book are "happening truths," as it is a work of fiction, so the way that it is written forces the reader to think and contorts their perceptions of truth and reality.

During the Harkness discussions, I participated often and I provided evidence to back my claims for each question. In the future, I want to ensure that I say everything that I want to say without worrying that I'm bothering people. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text?

Understanding the cultural and historical contexts behind literary texts is essential to fully appreciate and learn from them as it helps a reader to understand what and why the writer is writing about what they are. In Hughes's texts, understanding the culture of America (especially the South) and their sentiments and laws relating to people of color allows the reader to understand that Hughes was writing to quite literally free his people from what had been limiting them from living like an equal citizen of the United States. In understanding this, the reader knows the passion and determination that Hughes possessed to get his messages of hope, inspiration, and motivation across to every American in the United States to work towards their common goal of total freedom and equality for all, regardless of skin color.

How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own?
To what extent do literary texts offer insight into another culture?

Literary texts, such as the works of Langston Hughes, offer extensive insight into other cultures. In his poems, he describes the history of his ancestors and how the challenges they faced shaped him as he wrote. History is a significant component in the culture of a particular group of people, and African Americans' history of slavery, discrimination, and racism in America is illustrated in poems such as "Freedom's Plow," "Negro Mother," and "Hope for Harlem" specifically. Hughes also places special emphasis on the importance of family and unity in his writing, so the reader can infer that these were important aspects of black culture in America.

How do the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time?

The best literary texts have the ability to stay relevant and impactful even as time passes and society and politics change with it. No matter what new problems or issues arise, one can take lessons from older works and find ways to connect the themes and messages to relate to the present situation. For example, Langston Hughes wrote his poems during the Jim Crow era, when slavery was over but African Americans were most certainly not treated the same as white American citizens, as they faced racism and discrimination that prevented them from living a life of freedom and equality. Today, black people in America legally have the same rights as white people do, but they still lack the respect and dignity of several groups in society which allows racism to continue to impact many Americans. The themes and lessons of Hughes's poems, therefore, still apply today to anyone experiencing discrimination or racism, of any type and to any extent, to people across the world.

Reflection
How did you do during the Harkness discussions? What feedback did you receive?

During the Harkness discussions, I felt prepared most of the time, especially when I had good annotations to contribute to our discussions. I was good at finding global issues and making connections across Hughes's works, as well as identifying key authorial choices. However, my classmates and I were told constantly that we needed to go deeper into our analysis of those choices. Personally, I found that I need to focus a lot on "What does this choice mean and why does it matter?" and connect it to the theme of the poem/global issue that is at hand.

What connections can you make between some of Hughes' poems?

Several of Hughes's poems discuss the challenges faced by African Americans as they fought for freedom and equality in a very racist, discriminatory, and hateful America from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. He often called out the white government, the Constitution, and American history on their empty promises of a place of equal opportunity for every citizen. However, instead of dwelling on the negative aspects of their lives, Hughes often transitions to a motivational tone to inspire the black people who were reading his works to come together and use their strength in numbers to fight and hope for better lives for their descendants.

How does Hughes' poems connect to other works we've read?

Hughes's poems connect to The Things They Carried as the works explore the way that people respond to challenges unfairly placed on them during their lives and the way that these challenges transform their outlook on society and the world as a whole. With Tim O'Brien being forced to go to war and Hughes having to live as a black American of the South during a difficult time, each of the men was forced to find strength in themselves or their people to motivate themselves to persevere and keep going.

How does Hughes' poetry connect to our world today?

In our world today, racists and homophobes still exist. People struggle under the weight of challenges and expectations placed on them from birth that they cannot control. Hughes's messages of perseverance and unity can still be applied today as coming together, no matter the reason, can help us find strength and comfort in our tiring lives.

What insights did the poetry of Langston Hughes offer about the African-American community in Harlem?

Hughes's works gave me the impression that the African-American community in Harlem was resilient, close-knit, and hopeful. Hughes ensures that readers understand that they have endured a lot, but they do not allow that to get in the way of them fighting for themselves and their descendants so that one day every American can live their dream of total freedom and equality, regardless of skin color.

How does art reflect the community from which it comes?

Art, such as poetry, can reflect the community from which it comes in that it allows the creator to express the collective emotion, passion, history, and culture of a community. Hughes was able to speak for himself, but also the united voice of the black Harlem community, as he used various authorial techniques to get his messages, opinions, and sentiments across to his readers.

The structure and style of a literary text affect the meaning as they develop emotion and context within a novel. The fact that Morrison uses different streams of consciousness in Beloved gives us insight into the minds of the various characters throughout the novel and helps us understand the detrimental effects that their past traumas have on their current mental states, allowing Morrison to create deeper symbolism and themes in her work that help us understand her arguments throughout the book.

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.

Cultural and historical context is critical to the production and reception of a text. Stories like that of Garner and the Fugitive Slave Act create a foundation upon which Morrison is able to build characters and events in the novel that are based on real historical events. Context allows readers to make connections between the elements in the book and what actually happened in history, and often are forced to comprehend that the disgusting realities that Morrison describes actually took place.

Beloved connects to Hughes' works as it relates to the ways in which slaves were still haunted and oppressed even after they were freed, as their horrific trauma never left them. Hughes' poetry focused more on the perseverance and resilience of the slave community to continue working and dreaming for better days, such as in "Hope for Harlem," but Beloved suggests that slave communities were not always as close and family-knit as one would expect. Beloved connects to The Things They Carried again in dealing with elements of trauma and dehumanization that comes as a result of being in an environment revolving around violence and hate.

How does Beloved connect to our world today?

The symbol of Beloved’s character encompasses the complete account of American slavery in general, with Morrison originally using Sethe’s stubborn, unfettered character to represent the pursuing reluctance of a bulk of modern American society to admit that the behavior of their ancestors hundreds of years ago created serious ramifications for minority groups today. Morrison has used her narrative of Beloved to clearly argue that the United States cannot recover from its past as a prejudiced, racist, and segregated nation if Americans refuse to acknowledge and remember the traumatic history upon which their country was built.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

The novel specifically addresses issues of gender, writing, and power in that three of the four main characters are women, and the story is told from the point of view of all three. With Morrison including motifs of hunger and milk, she alludes to the intense, indescribable love between a mother and her daughter that a man, or anyone who is not a mother, cannot understand. As Morrison develops the plot, we see Sethe grow weaker while she is physically confronted with her trauma, but she ultimately is strong enough to survive the entire time that Beloved is in 124. With this, Morrison is able to represent the strength and power of not only slaves but also mothers, who are expected to do and be so much for other people that they can forget to care about themselves. In taking us into the stream of consciousness of Denver, Beloved, and Sethe, Morrison is finally able to give a voice to the slaves, especially the female ones, whose lives were destroyed as a result of institutionalized American slavery.

How does Chronicle offer insight into Columbian culture? Consider what we've learned about with machismo, marianismo, honor and the impact of colonialism.

COADAF offers insight into Columbian culture as it illustrates the faults in the hypocritical society which simultaneously values both religious and machismo ideals that contradict each other. In the fictional town depicted by Garcia Marquez, the bishop is a revered figure within the community, which can be seen as Santago Nasar wakes up very early the morning after a very late wedding. However, in this same town, one of the most glorified, lavish homes is that of Maria Alejandrina Cervantes, who runs the brothel that nearly all of the young men frequent at night. We see that even though Catholicism plays such a large role in the lives of these religious townspeople, men hold honor and chauvinist ideals, and women are encouraged to be submissive and chaste, before all else. In the town's collective ignorance and lack of shame regarding the foretold death of Santiago Nasar, we notice the parallel in both the men and women's compliant conformity to the destructive, pressuring, and sexist ideals of their society because they do not know anything different.

COADAF connects to The Things They Carried as both Garcia Marquez and O'Brien illustrate the way in which external societal pressures can drive people to make decisions that may not be in their best interest, psychologically or physically, and yet they decide to conform to these pressures or gender norms out of fear of rejection or humiliation that they will be faced with if they do not act in a certain way. In COADAF, Pedro and Pablo Vicario plan to kill Santiago Nasar because it was expected that they avenge their sister's honor, and we visibly see in our Final IO Extract that Pedro Vicario is suffering from the weight of his decision and he attempts to delay the murder. The entire society, too afraid or ignorant to know any better, allows this foretold muder to come into fruition without attempting to stop it at all, with the men and women encouraging the machismo principles that supported this masculine violence in the first place. In the vignette "On the Rainy River" in TTTC, we see how Tim O'Brien is given the opportunity to opt out of the draft and flee to Canada, where he would be safe and get to continue his education, but he decides not to merely because he is afraid that American society will reject him and deem him "cowardly," which O'Brien believed was not a characteristic of a true man or soldier. Later on in TTTC, we see that O'Brien is not the only man suffering from terror and the societal pressure to be strong and violent while in Vietnam, as these emotions are so heavy that they are described to have a "tangible weight." In each of the novels, societal expectations of men drive them to suffer psychologically and place themselves in immoral or dangerous situations in order to conform to these gender norms.

How does Chronicle connect to our world today?

COADAF connects to our world today in that societies around the world suffer from hypocritical religious, moral, and modern values which, when are all taken literally, contradict each other and cause problems. In the United States, modern progressive values often contradict with fundamentalist religious ones, which makes it difficult to understand what to believe. Across the world, men are not as respected when they are not treating women as equals in society, which is very different than the machismo and marianismo values which were upheld in the traditional Columbian society in the novel.

Intertextuality
How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?

The concept of "classic" literary texts is all relative because all individual works of literature have unique styles, as seen in Delbo's shifting between prose and poetry and use of various international perspectives in her work Days and Memory, Morrison's unique narrative structure and voices in Beloved, and obviously the fact that Satrapi's work is a graphic novel in itself makes it unique. Even though it is a graphic novel, it is still considered a literary text because words are essential to accompany the illustrations in order to develop the complex story shaped by Satrapi.

What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?

The work gave me immense insight into Iranian life during and after the revolution because we were able to follow the journey of Marjane from her time as a child in Iranian to her time in Europe as a young woman. Through the text and illustrations, I noticed the resistant nature of the Iranian citizens especially within in Marjane's own family. The book was successful in emphasizing that stereotyping a culture, especially when the nation is associated with violence, is extremely inaccurate.

Persepolis connects to other works we've read in that it explores the way in which resistance is prevalent even within the most oppressed societies. In Satrapi's work, we see how the constant protests that Marjane's parents participated in were dangerous, and yet persisted, and we see how women attempted to push the limits in dressing themselves as they pleased instead of how the government attempted to mask them. This is similar to the acts of resistance that we see in Days and Memory, as Delbo illustrates how women fought to ensure that their children would not die in concentration camps and women in Argentina protested like those in Iran to demand answers from their government for the unexplained disappearances of young men.

How does Persepolis connect to our world today?

Satrapi's graphic novel connects to our world today in that people continue to associate citizens of nations with bad, violent reputations as bad and violent as well. As seen in Persepolis, the majority of Iranians were angry with their oppressive government and did what they could to resist. Today, stereotyping is a common practice, and people continue to find it hard to comprehend that most people are inherently good and should not be associated with a few horrible terrorists, because everyone is their own person.

How are we affected by Delbo's memoir and her imperative for us to "Try to look. Try to see"? How were you affected by Days and Memory?

We are affected by Delbo's memoir and imperitave in that we feel compelled to empathize with those who underwent the unimaginable horrors of WWII, concentration camps, and the war's aftermath. However, it is impossible for us to try to comprehend that all of this inhumanity, violence, and torture was a reality for people who didn't live that long ago. I realized that I will never, ever understand how Hitler and his Nazi party grew as destructive and horrifying as they did or how they maintained their powerful status for such a long period, but I will also never be able to experience the pain and sense of powerlessness that the victims of these regimes did. I think this is exactly why Delbo wrote what and how she did- she spares no details, censors nothing, because no matter how hard it is for us to read about these incidents, we must try to look and see that all of it was real despite how otherworldly we understand it to be today.

In my opinion, Days and Memory connects most closely with Hughes' works and Morrison's Beloved. Both Delbo and Hughes write about people who were oppressed and persecuted for their skin colors, ethnicities, and sexualities, but their artful, poetic works emphasize the overpowering resilience, strength, and hope within these exploited groups and their desire to resist and fight for better futures for the coming generations instead of accepting their current qualities of life and social and economic statuses. Hughes, being a prominent writer during the Harlem Renaissance, uses his poems "Freedom's Plow" and "Hope for Harlem" to inspire black Americans to rise up and fight for civil rights, which, he reiterated, they were entirely deserving of because of their status as human beings and integral roles in the foundation of early America. Delbo uses "Warsaw" and "Madwomen of May," two poems within her prose, to give voice to the victims of the Nazi rule and following Communist regime in Poland as well as the mothers who demanded answers from their corrupt Argentinian government as they were angry that their husbands, sons, and grandsons were disappearing during the Dirty War, all of these groups whose governments attempted and failed to silence them.

Days and Memory also connects to Beloved in that both Delbo and Morrison carry the motif of unconditional love between mother and child throughout the entirety of their works. In Days and Memory, Delbo describes how mothers loved their children so much that they did everything they could to keep their child alive and ensured that they would escape the concentration camps even if they themselves didn't, and she also details a depressing story of how a Roma mother clung to her dead child and died in the process of attempting to escape Birkenau with it. In Beloved, the entire novel revolved around the relationships between Sethe and her two daughters, one of which she murdered to save it from a live that she didn't find worth living

How does D&M connect to our world today?

Days and Memory connects to our world today because so many people in the U.S. today have attempted to censor history so as not to emphasize the destruction, death, and oppression brought upon innocent groups by those who abused their power in the past. This book reminds us of the importance of at least trying to have people look and see the uncomfortable parts of history so that we remember them so that we do not repeat any of them again in the future. Without people like Delbo writing honest and unfiltered accounts of what actually happened in our world as a firsthand victim of the consequences of WWII, our world becomes less educated and more indifferent towards world events which affect others, but not themselves.
