Summary of Current Innovation

This current innovation solves the issue of ventilator shortages across the globe due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Students and Professors at Simon Fraser University (SFU) have been hard at work trying to create a portable ventilator to solve this issue. On September 20th, 2021, an article was published on Megadget.com discussing their new invention. This portable ventilator is created with a 3D printing machine and an origami style tube. This way of production makes it low cost at around $200 to produce rather than $2000 for the existing portable ventilator option. The new ventilator is also very lightweight making it easy to transport the device and deliver them. The machine can be controlled by adjusting the angles of the origami tube. This new innovation was completed just in time for the surge of the Delta variant. With the proper funding, SFU hopes to be able to mass produce this innovation and deliver them around the world. This device can also be sent to third world countries to help those in need.

I think this portable ventilator is great for use in the emergency department or in rural areas, but I don't think it is very efficient for long term use. The existing ventilators we have include multiple settings and alarms that would provide better patient outcomes, but in times of crisis a portable ventilator is appropriate. This portable system is exactly what we need during this COVID 19 pandemic when there is a shortage of ventilators. I hope SFU University gets the funding to mass produce these vents.
