With his high-status position among the modern-day pop industry, Dominic uses every ounce of influence he possesses to speak on the social and political state of the world that affects his audience. During his interview with Hayden Davies, Yungblud compares his music to that of a “Trojan horse” (Davies,2024), one which disguises his provocative and confrontational lyricism on politics with “catchy” fun music.

John Lennon

Lennon strongly believed that the industry should be used for more than simply entertaining the masses it influenced, the sheer outreach that popular music had on society at the time should be used to deliver powerful messages at times of unrest and societal tension. As apparent when producing his music Lennon advocated against war, political corruption, racism and preached general world peace. This running theme heavily inspired Grandson to use his platform to deliver the same message in a dialect that today’s generation could understand and be made aware of how fast and how volatile the state of the world is today.

Yungblud refers to bowie as the “pinnacle of artistic creation” (Schafer, 2023), an artist that freely challenged social standards and being open to change in terms of his music and style whilst maintaining a consistent growth alongside his loyal audience. Yungblud was no exception, from his debuting EP he continued to rapidly grow outside of his standard pop punk productions branching out too other genres such as metal and hip hop, this free expression is also seen outside the industry of music as he continues to blend with other popular icons.

The Clash became a pinnacle point in defining the punk movement, another group who left impressionable views of the state of the political world. Alongside his powerful expression of controversial views against political and social norms, Yungblud drew influence from The Clashes explosive and up tempo feeling creating an ideal that music can be both informative and fun, creating a sound that won’t only draw an audience in but can inform them of the world around them.

Marshall Mathers "Eminem"

From a creative perspective Eminem has pushed far beyond the boundaries of narrative expression, utilizing complex wordplay and raw lyrics to deliver a powerful message within his music. Grandson speaks on how his influences shifted through genres as he developed as an artist, and notably the hip hop scene became one of his most recognizable tropes. His intricate wordplay and unfiltered lyrics emphasis the delivery of his message, as far as adapting his words to be sung in a more narrative format comparably to reading a novel or a piece of informative scripture. This same style of lyricism is what Eminem is best known for and can be seen influencing generations of artists.

This Influence also applies to Yungblud, stating in an interview that listening to Eminem introduced him to the world of hip-hop and found his music to be an outlet of expressing suppressed emotions and a sense of being misunderstood. Yungblud also appears to draw from Eminem’s disregard for censorship and delivers his music with a deep powerful unfiltered message that most labelling companies often shunned. This was first noticed on his world-wide hit ‘Parents’, a song with a strong narrative that challenged the boundaries of the industry.
