Question 2 - How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?

In our thriller the audience is presented with two teenage girls who are both dressed as stereotypical working class teenagers would dress, in jeans and Eleanor wearing a hoodie, and Tahlia then putting her coat on. We chose this clothing because we didn't want a obvious class recognition, we wanted the audience to connect with the characters, we felt that if the characters were dressed smartly, or dressed casually we would not successfully achieve our audience connecting on a personal level with Tahlia, we also teenagers so our target audience could relate as much as possible due to them being 15+. We showed an argument between Tahlia and Eleanor in Eleanors house as it was a stereotypical location as at this time your life's it is common to be at your friends house a lot.

We did not use a lot of dialogue, other than at the beginning and at the end. Eleanor was heard saying "what do you want?" when she answers the phone, this is showing her status and how stereo-typically teenagers speak 'commonly.' We used a park as the majority of the location because as a group we agreed that it is a typical area for teenagers to socialise and with parks being very common, we felt the audience are likely to be able to relate. We then went on to film in a wood, which is stereo-typically dangerous and is very popular among horror films. We felt that the wood could symbolise how teenagers shouldn't walk alone and that anything could happen. Throughout the whole of our thriller production we used a black and white filter which was used to build up the suspense. The audience do not see bright colours, instead they are presented with greys and blacks making the clips more sinister. Therefore we represented the social group in our thriller product as they can easily relate to having petty arguments with their friends which are very often over exaggerated. Teenagers on parks are often seen as 'trouble' and are stereotyped as vandalising and leaving litter. We chose to film later in the evening as it showed how teenagers tend to hang around the parks and that's the place they would go to get away from home.

We chose to represent our characters using these techniques because of our target audience. We felt that using two teenagers of normal class would mean both upper and lower class are able to feel as though this could happen to them. Therefore our product represents all teenagers. However, as you can see our characters were both white, and although this was unintentional, it does represent how the area of which we filmed isn't particularly multicultural, making the thriller opening a lot more realistic for people which are familiar with the area. Our characters being female also went against the dominant representations in horror openings as they are usally presented as having power and usually being the hero or even the villain, however or thriller doesn't include males as we wanted to show it was possible to present women as vulnerable without having to rely on a male to put her in that situation.

The aim of our product was to give the message that no matter what your age, what location, or how safe you feel, things such as kidnap, rape and murder is still a possibility and although it isn't spoke about as much anymore, they can still happen and children/teenagers should be made more aware.
