Situational Irony- Kino is not listening to his family and does not trust Juana but he trusts the pearl more, although he knows it's causing him evil. We see in the story Kino doing things that are completely based on the pearl. Things like him hitting his wife to stop her from throwing away the pearl, and feeling like he was being cheated out of a good deal for the pearl. This makes this situational, as we wouldn't expect him to do this for a pearl.

Dramatic Irony ~ When Kino and Juana is hiding, Juana sees a tree. And Kino says not to break it or "red blood will flow from it and it is evil luck". This is dramatic irony as we the readers know that will really give them bad luck is the pearl, but the characters don't know this. We also see an example of this where a lot of people want to get the pearl in different scenes, but they don't know it's evil.

Pearl ~ Represents: Evil

The pearl was the main thing that caused the downfall of Kino. We saw very early that the pearl was evil when Kino started having nightmares with a dark figure trying to steal his pearl. Also, the pearl dealers said it was a monstrosity, which hints at it being evil.

The scorpion that bit Coyotito ~ Represents: Bringing of evil

When the scorpion stung Coyotito, it symbolizes the evil soon to come. This event incited the following events of the story. Scorpions are usually thought of as evil. So, with the scorpion stinging Coyotito, that was the first part of

Kino's house being burnt down/him murdering someone ~ Represents: Kino losing himself and greediness taking over him without him knowing that he is destroying

Near the end of the story, Kino begins to become madder and angrier with people. He starts disconnecting from the people he loves, and it shows when he murders someone. That shows that his anger has taken over. Meanwhile, his house burning down after he murdered the man symbolized that his old life was going away.

The theme is that greed is a powerful force and can separate people. This connects to the story as we see Kino become angry and evil trying to sell the pearl off. This ends up separating him from his family emotionally and mentally, and results in him murdering someone, in which results in his child being killed.
