Eddie is the protagonist, or the main character. The story is told almost all in flashbacks of him in the war, him with Marguerite, and his father. It also tells about his past birthdays that show significance to the people he meets.

"Before he could take another breath, the noise of children disappeared above him, and he was submerged in a strong byt silent current. His grip was still entwined with Tala's, but he felt his body being washed from his sould, meat from the bone, and with it went all the pain and weariness he ever held inside him" (Albom 193).

What I liked about this book

I liked how this was told in flashbacks, it helps me understand the characters better and their meanings. Also, all of the people he met like the Blue Man, his Captain in the army, Ruby from Ruby Pier, Marguerite, and the little Asian girl. The ending was my favorite, when he was talking to the little Asian girl named Tala, she made sense of his life. Eddie had killed her in the war, yet she brought him to Heaven.

Topic and theme explanation

In the ending of the book, he meets a little Asian girl named Tala. She informs him that he saved the little girl from the roller coaster. Eddie killed Tala in the war. So after I read this part, I think the theme is more so Karma. He killed the little girl, Tala, and saved another from an accident then died.

The theme of this book isn't death, as you might think it is based on the title, but more of understanding your place on earth and why everything happen for a reason. The topic is on Eddie, and the five people he meets after his death to understand his life better.
