I would love to have a web resource to point postdocs and PIs towards but I don't want to be responsible for knowing anything IN that resource. As a postdoc admin, I work for the PIs in my dept, and I never interact with recent PhDs who haven't figured out where they're going yet or gotten funding yet. Sometimes prospective postdocs approach my PIs after receiving an award, and then my PI agrees to hire them as an outside-funded postdoc. Since the PI should determine funding before posting a Postdoc position, I'm struggling to picture scenarios where my postdoc needs funding (other than emergency funds). Like, did the PI lose funding that had been intended for that postdoc? Or the PI only ever planned/needed a postdoc for fewer than 5 yrs, but the postdoc wants to continue training a few more years to the max of 5? The end date is known from the offer letter, so postdoc & PI should be discussing right from day 1 what will happen (and where funding will come from) when this postdoc term ends, whether that's a discussion of a possible reappointment here in the PIs lab, or a discussion of how the postdoc will move on from the lab due to postdoc term limits or PI no longer has funding. Either way, my main advice that I would give a postdoc is to discuss/search early on.
