Hello, I teach English literature in Italy (students 16-18). And I like having my students think about a literary work from different perspectives, in order to know and accept different and often opposing interpretations.

For example, when going through Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", we first analyze it as the first anti-colonialist novel. But after that I ask them to read Chinua Achebe's critical analysis of the novel, considered a terribly racist work. Students learn to be open to different points of view.

As for the "hate speech", I ask them them read works from the colonial english writers, see Kiplling's "The white man's burden" or Conrad's himself, who, while exalting the white civilization, in their words contain deeply racist words, which nowadays would be considered "hate speech".
