IDEA law is the Individuals with Disabilities Act and it has the goal to improve the quality of life for individuals who have disabilities. Individuals from the ages of birth to 21 qualify under two separate provisions in the IDEA law. There are six principles of the IDEA law:
Zero reject - Schools can not exclude any student with a disability from receiving the education that the law deems is necessary for that individual
Nondiscriminatory evaluation - Determines what services a student with disability needs and if that student has a disability
Free appropriate education - The education for the student with disability is tailored to meet their needs in a way that is appropriate
Least restrictive environment - Providing the student with an environment in which they can interact with non-disabled peers whenever possible
Procedural due process - Helps to hold parents and school systems accountable to each other for the education the child is receiving in the classroom and at home
Parent & student participation - Parents are included as apart of the education and are notified before any changes are made to their child's education
