Individuals from the ages of birth to 21 qualify under two separate provisions in the IDEA law. There are six principles of the IDEA law:
Zero reject - Schools can not exclude any student with a disability from receiving the education that the law deems is necessary for that individual
Nondiscriminatory evaluation - Determines what services a student with disability needs and if that student has a disability
Free appropriate education - The education for the student with disability is tailored to meet their needs in a way that is appropriate 
Least restrictive environment - Providing the student with an environment in which they can interact with non-disabled peers whenever possible 
Procedural due process - Helps to hold parents and school systems accountable to each other for the education the child is receiving in the classroom and at home
