Inova’s internal medicine program is a fully accredited three-year residency with a concentration in adult general internal medicine. During this training, interns work with a variety of hospitalists, internal medicine specialists and subspecialty physicians to learn the ins and outs of caring for adult patients.

The program is primarily based at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) for inpatient rotations on general wards, intensive care units and emergency medicine. Residents also do a significant amount of ambulatory training in Inova specialty clinics, select Inova-associated community practices and Inova Internal Medicine Group clinic locations.

IFMC Internal Medicine Residency Program faculty members lead the PGY1 year of training with a focus on clinical skills through the use of the state-of-the-art Inova Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (ICAMS). Interns are supervised by critical care faculty in mock-code scenarios and receive individualized instruction in central line placement, airway management, ultrasound and hemodynamics.

For the PGY2 and PGY3 years of training, the emphasis shifts to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of complex medical conditions and to provide the highest level of care for patients. These goals are achieved through an active research program in collaboration with major academic centers and industry leaders.

Inova offers inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services, including a new 25-bed unit that will offer private patient rooms with safety features such as hidden sensors to detect self-harm.
