1.	Look up the difference in meanings between the words empathize and sympathize. Why does the author choose these two words?

Sympathize: to understand and care about someone´s problems.

Empathize: to be able to understand how someone else feels.

Because these two words has a little difference between each other, and is that little that makes the difference in how his parents can understand the situation of the boy/girl. Also, the author choose these words relation with the context, the relation between the parents and the boy/girl, it makes reference to that the parents can understand that s/he has “problems” but they can´t understand the feeling and how the boy/girl feels.

For us the poem is pessimistic because the author makes reference to the situation that the boy/girl is suffering and how his parents are suffering with him, because they want, but they can´t understand him. A line that makes reference to that could be “Controlling my actions as I make; Mistake after mistake as I try to get better; I try to get better as I continue to suffer”.

But then, at the end of the poem the author seems to be hopeful because s/he wants to feeling well, s/he look forward to a better future, him/er future and the other persons future.

“Hope that everyone will get better; Hope that you will get better; Hope that I, will get better”

The speaker is talking with all people who read the poem, the author is talking about the experience that he/she lives, so is expresing her/his feeling about that situation. The gender is not revealed, because in situations like this all people can go through, and what the author wants is for us to understand this type of situation that anyone can go through; not a specific gender suffers this.

4. The author resorts to a game of words when he mentions the adverbs ‘always’ and ‘sometimes? What message does he want to convey?

S/He wants to makes reference to when we use always to describe a situation, we are saying that is uncertain, indefinite, that we can’t specify how long these would take or is taking. As we understand what the author wants to say with “always is an exaggeration of sometimes” is that when we use always we are pessimistic about what want we want to say. “And I suffer. Always”, if instead of always the author use sometimes, this suffering could turn into in some moments the s/he doesn´t suffer, good moments, as the author says “sometimes means there’s hope; Like the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel”, maybe a piece of good things in the middle of the bad things.

But in the poem, it makes reference to if s/he suffer, him/er mothers suffers too)

Alliteration – Tricolon: I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, (the author repeats I am sorry because s/he wants to focus on that, if the word is repeated THREE TIMES, the word will be fixed in our head and thoughts).

Antithesis: I hit my head, but my dad clutches his head. (As the mother suffer the same as him/er, the author wants to create contrast with what happened with him/er parent, is not the same, something is different, they are opposite).

Chiasmus: Hope that everyone will get better. Hope that you will get better. Hope that I, will get better (It´s an order here, everyone à you à me, the author position in a determinate order that is like, first à second à third).

Essay Poem Rice

This essay is going to be about an analysis of the poem that can be found in chapter 14, "The Rent Collector" book, and changing a word to enrich the essay: people instead rice.
"Even though rice adapts to many enviroments, it needs plenty of sunshine, water, and nutrients to thrive" This line make refference that people can grow or develop theirselves in any enviroments, as long as the conditions are good. If people work in a job where the people who work with them are bad, they won´t be able to show a 100% of them. Everyone need a place to be confortable, not to be umconfortable.
Another line that make noise to me was "Rice comes in many varieties - brown, black, white, and red - including long-grain (slender), mrdium-grain (short and fat) - short-grain (nearly round), sweet, sticky, and more. All varieties are good". This point make refference of equality, people are all the same, they are all good. Their conditions or caracteristics can´t define who they are, it´s in their heart.
As the third, and the last one, "While ricedoes best in certain enviroments, sometimes you have no control over natural conditions. Don´t worry. Rice has an uncanny ability to tolerate both drought and flood". This piece of the poem is the best. It boost to humanity to be strong and wait the best of every situation. It doesn´t matter that a temporary situation is bad, people will be able to cope with that.
To sum up, people is like rice, they both grow, live and died. The focus is in living a life that make people happy, a good life.
