Cal never asked directly if we would do work for him. For example, if he struggled with reading a word we would ask him to break the word apart and sound it out. Although it would have been easier for both of us to just give him the word, Cal was always up for the task in finding the solution himself with a little support from us.

Asked clarifying questions to ensure he knew the expectations.
