Building a personal relationship with each of my students is a priority of mine. At the beginning of the year, I start with the basics by having students fill out an "All About Me" form so that I can know basics such as birthdays, favorite colors, music, etc. Later I build on that by starting conversations. One part of the Aerospace curriculum is for students to research and report about an astronaut of their choosing. First, allowing students to make their own choice, they can choose someone they are interested in. 

The end product will also be student choice.  They can choose to create a letter from the view point of the astronaut, write a research paper, create a presentation from Google Slides, or create a song to show the information they have researched. They are given a variety of ways to show their learning. While researching, they are able to use books, videos, and online resources. Every month we choose an astronaut. This astronaut will be highlighted for their achievements and contributions to Aerospace History. Most often students have a certain image in mind when thinking of astronauts. However, they become surprised and excited to see the diversity.

Matching astronauts with common hobbies, ethnicities, and backgrounds of our students make the students feel like they are a part of the classroom. At the beginning of the year, all of my classes participate in a Mission Patch project. Since we are a Magnet School for Aerospace, it is important for students to be well versed in the missions, spacecrafts, and astronauts. A mission patch is a patch that is designed specifically for each space mission. It is unique to that mission and its symbols and colors represent the key highlights of the mission. In application to my students, each one makes their own mission path to represent their individual self providing rationale for each color and symbol used. 

By doing this activity, I get to know my students and build relationships with them. Students earn or lose points based on any behavior the teacher wants to define such as class on time, helping, staying on task, etc. This provides students incentives and shows that you are monitoring. By positively reinforcing students, you are praising them for their acts of good service, behavior, and achievement of goals. Students need to know that you believe in them. By showing them the praise they deserve, they know that you want them to succeed and are proud of them for doing so. It empowers them and motivates them to achieve even greater. In Digital Literacy 6, students are to identify a world problem such as poverty, hunger, racism, etc. in a country they have never heard of or heard little of. Choice is key. Students will choose something they want to learn.

Following, students research about the topic and identify a specific problem. Furthering their research they create a solution to the problem. It can be anything from creating a brochure to create awareness to implementing a medical supply bag program to third world countries. 

Students take initiative for their project and choose the problem and solution. At the beginning of the year, instead of Ms.Seo establishing classroom rules, you will receive sticky notes to write down what YOU need from this class/Ms.Seo, what YOU want from this class/Ms.Seo, what YOU think an active student is, and what YOU will contribute to the class. I compile all of these and create an individualized classroom contract. For each class I teach, the make up is different. Therefore the rules, needs, and wants are different. 

By listening to my students this way, they see that I am interested in their learning and how they learn.
