         <description><![CDATA[<p>Virulence is the degree to which a pathogen harms its host. Malaria has varying virulence depending on the species. Some of the most common species are <em>Plasmodium falciparum,</em> which is highly virulent. <em>P. vivax</em> is moderately virulent. Usually less severe than <em>falciparum,</em> but it can still cause severe anemia and pregnancy complications. Death is uncommon with timely care. <em>P. knowlesi</em> is highly virulent. Can progress rapidly to severe disease; requires prompt treatment.</p>]]></description>

There have also been developments in using methods like insecticides to control mosquito populations in areas prone to the disease.</p>]]></description>
