Battle of Mount Dos Hermanas

(June 11-12, 1982)
In 1982, the genocidal Military Junta that illegitimately ruled Argentina between 1976 and 1983, organized an attack on the Malvinas Islands whose purpose was to recover them, which since 1883 have been invaded by the British Empire. In the Malvinas War, the Military Junta sent young men who were doing military service and who had little or no training for the war. Among these young people, I will highlight the participation of Oscar Ismael Poltronieri in the Battle of Monte Dos Hermanas:

Oscar Ismael Poltronieri was born in Mercedes, Buenos Aires province, on February 2, 1962. He dedicated himself to working in the fields, in his childhood and adolescence, so he had to drop out of school as the breadwinner for the family.
And being just an 18-year-old, he fought in the Malvinas War as a conscripted soldier.
Very close to the end of the warlike conflict, between June 11 and 12, 1982 at the Battle of Monte Dos Hermanas, Poltronieri, who was the operator of a machine gun, ignored the order to withdraw when the English advanced and the Argentines fell wounded or dead, like his trench mate.
He was left to fight alone. "Go to hell because you have children, and I don't, I'm staying", more words, fewer words came out of his mouth to his superior Lieutenant "Tito" Echeverría, who had had a daughter, according to what he learned through a letter.
There, for 9 or 10 hours, with a single machine gun, he prevented the enemy from advancing. He saved dozens of lives of comrades, more than 150, who managed to retreat to a safe place.
For this act he received the medal "The Cross of the Argentine Nation for Heroic Valor in Combat", the highest award for feat and heroism for military and security personnel. He is the only Argentine alive to receive it.
After the war, like many others, it was forgotten. He lived in poverty and without work. Today he has a street in his native Mercedes and a monolith that will forever remember that selfless and heroic gesture.
