Mersin is a province of Turkey. It has 13 districts, four of which are central districts. Mersin is a port city located in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Mersin Port is among the largest ports in Turkey. Tourism, industry, agriculture and maritime are developed in the city.Districts in the center are Akdeniz, Mezitli, Yenişehir, Taurus; its other districts are Anamur, Aydıncık, Bozyazı, Silifke, Tarsus, Çamlıyayla, Erdemli, Gülnar and Mut. It has thirteen districts in total.[1] It has a metropolitan municipality status. It is a port city located in the south of Turkey. Mersin Port is among the largest ports in Turkey.[2]Many layers were unearthed during the excavations in the Yumuktepe mound in the north of the city. The oldest of these dates to 6300 BC, and the newest to the Seljuk period. The artifacts unearthed during the excavations are exhibited in Mersin Archeology Museum, Adana Archeology Museum and Tarsus Museum, Silifke Museum and Anamur Museum. In the Hellenistic period, the name of the city was Zephyrion. The name of Mezitli, which remains within the borders of the city today, was Soli. However, during the Arab raids, the city was emptied. Mersin's appearance on the stage of history coincides with the middle of the 19th century. The region, which was still a village in this period, hosted a nomadic Turkmen tribe and took its name from this tribe. In addition, the Greeks from the Cappadocia region had come to dominate the city population, and in 1850, 1,600 Muslims lived in the city compared to 5,250 Orthodox Greeks. The fate of the city changed, especially during the American Civil War, with the cotton production developing in Çukurova in order to eliminate the cotton shortage in the world and the connection of the region to the railway network in 1866. During this period, Mersin quickly became a port and trade center where Çukurova's agricultural products were exported. The importance of the Christian Levantines, even though they are a minority, is undeniable in the city's current state. There are still two Levantine cathedrals in the city: the Latin-Italian Cathedral and the Arab-Orthodox Cathedral. It is also on the agenda to build a church for the Greeks in the north of the city.
