Carla McGruder is a Senior Clinical Genetic Counselor at Color Health, where she provides leadership on the All of Us research program. Her areas of expertise include cancer, cardiology, pharmacogenomics, cultural humility and utilization management. Carla also provides genetic services in non-traditional ways through Good Genes Genetic Counseling Services, LLC. She received her MS in Genetic Counseling from the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Carla serves as a mentor and networker with the Minority Genetics Professionals Network. She is a dedicated member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and serves as the Secretary- Treasurer elect for the NSGC Board of Directors.

Deanna R. Darnes, MS, LCGC

Deanna R. Darnes is a Clinical Trial Specialist at Scripps Research Translational Institute working primarily with Polygenic Risk Scores. She received her Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling from the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 2010. Initially Deanna worked in pediatric care. She practiced as a clinical pediatric genetic counselor at Children’s Hospital Colorado in the Genetics and Inherited Diseases Department. She then transitioned into reproductive genetic counseling and eventually became the Director of Genetic Counseling Services at Fetal Care Center Dallas where she also provided the only prospective Genetic Counseling student shadowing program in North Texas. Deanna serves her community as a mentor through the Minority Genetics Professionals Network (MGPN) and by providing speaking engagements to various labs, universities, and hospitals on the importance of Genomic Equity.

She is a former member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), Texas Society of Genetic Counselors (TSGC), a member of National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and Minority Genetics Professionals Network (MGPN). In her spare time Deanna is an avid reader and fierce dodgeball player through
USA Dodgeball.

Chandler Means is a clinical genetic counselor at Genome Medical specializing primarily in cancer genetics. Prior to this role, she worked in a mixed clinical and non-clinical role at Providence Health in California. She received her Master’s in Genetic Counseling from Boston University. Her graduate school research focused on assessing the title genetic counselor and its continued appropriateness and relevance. Her findings were published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling in 2019 titled: “I am a Genetic Counselor”: A qualitative exploration of field leaders’ perceptions of the title “genetic counselor.”

Antonina Wojcik is a laboratory genetic counselor and instructor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic. She specializes in somatic oncology. Antonina received her MS in Genetic Counseling from California State University, Stanislaus in 2015. Prior to joining Mayo clinic, Antonina practiced as a pediatric genetic counselor with expertise in neurology, ophthalmology and inborn errors of metabolism. I am very happy with the name of a genetic counselor as the last audience mentioned I agree with him that we have to add genetics in the school for the students so they can have more opportunities and time to know the field of genetic counselor so that they have a background about genetics before they graduate from the secondary school

I think the argument of who the title attracts is SUPER important. We need to find out if there’s a title that would better attract underrepresented groups of all types (notably NOT JUST MEN) both to join the profession, and utilize our services. That’s worth a LOT of the admittedly huge costs and pain and risks it would take to change. But it’s also far from the only reason for the disparities we have now, much of which probably need to be addressed the hard way (outreach, education etc) just like the original problem of people not knowing who we are and what we do.
