The shoulders of suits were bred to give them a slimmer look. Men wore only black in the evening. That was the only acceptable colorat this time of day, despite the crisp white shirt worn under the vest and coat. A bowtie was worn under the tails of the white shirt. 
Women began showing some skin. Daringly enough, women would popularly wear sleeveless dresses that went from anywhere between mid-thigh to mid-calf. A bold, square, low neckline, with no covering or jewelry, was seen as "nude" and portrayed to be risqué.
