Dong dong chiang, dong dong chiang ... this melody, the noise of drum and cymbal, are part to my memory which leads to this festival.

Chinese New Year, is a festival I celebrate, something that represents who I am. This festival is celebrated according to the lunar calendar.

There are a lot of myths to why it's celebrated, and one of it is the story of Nian, and I bet you have heard it before. If no, I shall tell you the story. Back in the old days, there was a creature, called Nian, living in the sea.

It is said to come up to the ground by the first day of the Lunar Calendar. Because it eats people, everybody hid in their houses, and are scared to come out.

Until one day, somebody who was wearing red clothes, and taking pots, met Nian when walking in the streets. He was afraid and dropped his pots. Nian was scared hearing the pots falling and even scared after seeing the red cloth he is wearing.

So, after this, he told everyone about this, and everybody knew how to defeat Nian. The secret was to wear red clothes, and make loud sounds. So, they wore red clothes on that day, burned bamboo to make loud noises and knocked pots together to drive Nian away.

After the day, people wore red clothes, and burned firecrackers (which before was bamboo) during the first of the Lunar Calender. This is only one of the versions of the story, there are still a lot, but this is the one I heard.

On this special day, all the family members gather together. There are a lot of activities we do, such as eating together, and playing firecrackers. And the kid’s most favourite, Angpau. We were suppose to offer tea to our parents to get it, but now, we simply just get it, yahoooo!

There are also a lot of big places such as megamalls or stores hanging lanterns and holding lion dance performance. They will also have a lot of other performance held. When you walk in, you can hear the Chinese New Year songs and have the feel of the festival.

This festival is a fun festival, which had a long history, but please, don't forget to celebrate Chinese New Year, and also, get your Ang Pao!

The festival was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely, and the evening preceding the New Year's Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also a tradition for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill fortune and to make way for incoming good luck.
