This links back to my experience with highschool. I experienced distance education through Open Access College in years 10-12. I found mathematics particularly challenging as it felt like I didn't have a 'real teacher' right there when I needed her. To communicate with my teacher in a way that wouls enhance my learning I had to learn to use the relevant terminology for my the subject. This happened either in video conferences or via email.
I would often use words like thing, and stuff because I had not developed the ability to talk fluently about new concepts using mathematical language.
