Talking to learn by Hannah Trinkle

This tends more towards secondary education because that is my focus, but I still think its relevant because primary school is what prepares students for secondary school. Primary teachers can help equip children with the skills necessary for effective talk in the secondary years.

Talking has a Place in the Mathematics Classroom

"Drawing on observation in a primary school classroom and interviews with secondary/high school students, they argue that talk should be considered as a means for both providing a teacher's expert guidance and for enabling students to take ownership of their learning of mathematics."
(Solomon & Black, 2008).

This links back to my experience with highschool. I experienced distance education through Open Access College in years 10-12. I found mathematics particularly challenging as it felt like I didn't have a 'real teacher' right there when I needed her. To communicate with my teacher in a way that wouls enhance my learning I had to learn to use the relevant terminology for my the subject. This happened either in video conferences or via email.
I would often use words like thing, and stuff because I had not developed the ability to talk fluently about new concepts using mathematical language.

References
Solomon, Y. & Black, L.
