This quote does not seem like it would have a lot of context behind it but it does. The person doing Eddie's birthday bumps is Eddie's uncle and Eddie did not like the birthday bumps at all. While Eddie is getting his birthday bumps by his uncle it reminds him of his father and old memories with his father. Once his birthday bumps are over he gets up punches his uncle and runs to mother and explains that he was scared in way that didn't make it obvious.

They were captured and held for six months in the Phillipines under close observation and abusive tactics by the Phillipino soldiers. In this quote Eddie and his soldier friends planned an attack and excape plan to get out of there. Eddie was showing the guards that he could juggle with rocks as a distraction and when he said so they went into attack mode. Eddie attacked one of the guards with one of the rocks and then got another guard with another rock and then they all made a run for it.
