Although life feels like a giant panic scenario that I’m stuck in the middle of, I have truly taken the time in the last couple days to sit down and think about what I am thankful for. Specifically, I am grateful that none of my family or friends have been directly affected by the virus. Also, I feel very lucky that I have a comfortable place to stay in while quarantining, as well as plenty of food and supplies. Finally, I am appreciative for the fact that both of my parents are not only still working, but they are involved in helping the health of others during this time. My dad is continuing to run his practice while my mom is working everyday in the COVID-19 tent to test patients and take care of the other children who come in for any other concerns. News has been out for a while now regarding the closure of the Disney parks, but recently, Disney has announced the extended closure of the parks. In this recent announcement, they have stated that the Disney resorts, parks, water parks, shopping, hotels, will be closed until further notice. I was not only supposed to go to Disney over winter break, but I am a huge Disney World fan and wanted to go another time this year. However, I did purchase a penny board, basically a skateboard that is flatter and only have one curved edge. Penny boards aren’t meant for tricks and skateboards are, so that is the main reason I wanted to purchase a penny board over the skateboard. After lots of research about the best board to buy, I decided on the 27 inch penny nickel board. This board is easier to start out with because it is slightly longer, so it is easier to use. After making a PowerPoint to convince my parents to allow me to get it and impatiently awaiting its arrival, I got it 3 days ago in the mail and have been using it constantly! Once I wasn’t allowed to eat gluten or leavening ingredients, my mom bought these grain free chips. As someone involved in acting and someone who LOVES watching TV and movies, I was getting really excited for all of the new movies and seasons of TV shows that were coming out this year. Huge titles such as In the Heights and the real-life Mulan movie were coming out, but almost all of these projects’ release dates have been delayed. This news was extremely devastating to people like me who were looking forward to these titles coming out, but now we will have to wait until the team on each project feels it is appropriate and okay to release the movie/TV show. For almost my entire life, I have been involved in theatre and absolutely love attending shows, especially on broadway. For the last couple of years, I have been spending almost my entire summer in New York at theatre sleep away camp, theatre intensives, and watching new broadway shows. Due to the Coronavirus, news was originally released stating that broadway would be closed until mid April. Recently, that closure was extended to the beginning of June. This not only shuts down broadway for a duration of almost two months, but it closed shows such as Beetlejuice for good, as they were supposed to close the day for broadway is no reopening. My neighborhood has a giant circle of a sidewalk, but usually there is no one taking advantage of the outside or of this space. Honestly, I am not the most “outdoorsy” person, so I can consider myself one of the majority of my neighbors who spends their time inside. Recently, I have been walking around the neighborhood much more often, as I cannot go anywhere else. This gives me time to venture outside and go around the neighborhood. Ironically, many of the other residents in my development had the same idea as me, so I have seen many other people walking around or running while I was penny boarding. The neighborhood is still pretty quiet, but it’s definitely more lively than normal. When first hearing about coronavirus, I didn’t think much of it at all. It wasn’t near our country, and it hadn’t yet started to rapidly spread when I discovered it. People around me started to freak out once it reached Italy, as they felt that if it were to spread to Europe, it could certainly make its way to North America and the United States. However, I remained calm and still did not think that this virus would end up affecting us. Once it reached America, all of my friends went into panic mode. My family and I were not worried, as my mom and dad are doctors and would have to deal with this intense situation anyway. My brother and I knew it was on the radar, but chose not to freak out or panic. Now that this virus has spread each town of Florida and almost covered the world, I realized that choosing not to panic was a great decision. Although we still are extremely cautious and aware of its presence, not worrying 24/7 about the virus has helped me mentally, allowing me to not stress as much.
