They are mainly brought into the market during the spring and summer time but its is an item that is well preserved all year round and can be enjoyed any time you may like. Since all types of peppers: bell, spicy or chili peppers are a main component of the Mediterranean diet, we find that they are used in almost every savory recipe. That’ s why we have selected it as one of the food items we are going to grow in our school garden.

In the other regions, it cannot be planted outdoors, because it cannot withstand the low winter temperatures. In these places it can be grown in a pot (which must have a diameter equal to 2/3 of the diameter of the foliage), which will be covered during the winter. Even in the pot it can produce fruits, but they are usually not collected, but remain on the tree for decorative reasons.

The lemon is a fruit tree belonging to the Rutaceae family.
The origins of the lemon are uncertain, it is thought that the first places where it grew are China, where it grew before the Song dynasty.
According to some scholars, the ancient Romans already knew about lemons. The hypothesis is supported by the representations of these fruits in some mosaics in Carthage and frescoes in Pompei (Naples). Thie specific variety of Amalfi Lemon, named for its long spindle-like shape, has been cultivated only to grow on the coastline around Amalfi (Campania region). The southern Italian microclimate, the mixing of ocean winds, the specific nutrients in the soil, the pergolas with chestnut poles that support the heavy branches, the thick blankets of plastic nets in winter, the dry terracing that allows the plants to be oxygenated, and the organic fertiliser made with sheep, goat and mule manure… All these things lead to unique growing conditions that can’t be replicated. Every year in February, the harvest begins with the lemons in gardens closest to the sea. Further inland, where the climate is cooler and damper, the last lemons are picked in late October. From February to October, huge sacks of lemons must be carried down the hill by hand.

Classes II F - II D of RUVO DEL MONTE & SAN FELE- Secondary school - IC ATELLA - ITALY -THE VINE: A PLANT WHICH GROWS A LOT IN ITALIAN REGIONS

The vine is a climbing arboreal plant which, in order to grow, attaches itself to supports (tutors) by means of tendrils; if the plant is not pruned it can reach considerable widths and heights by attaching itself to trees, on rocky walls, or by covering the ground. It has a very developed root system, which can even exceed 10 meters in length. It also has a trunk of considerable length from which numerous branches, called shoots, branch off.The leaves, called vine leaves, palminervie, alternate, are simple and made up of five more or less deep main lobes, on a heart-shaped base.
The leaves are a very important diagnostic character for the recognition of the vines of the various species, and within the European cultivated vine (Vitis vinifera sativa).
Italian wine is produced in every region of Italy. Italy is the world's largest producer of wine, with an area of 702,000 hectares under vineyard cultivation, and contributing a 2013–2017 annual average of 48.3 million hl of wine. Vines have been cultivated from the wild Vitis vinifera grape for millennia in Italy. It was previously believed that viticulture had been introduced into Sicily and southern Italy by the Mycenaeans, as winemaking traditions are known to have already been well-established in Italy by the time the first Greek colonists arrived on Italy's shores around 800 BC.

Basilicata can certainly be defined as the land of chestnuts with the presence of an incredible variety of biodiversity. This is testified, even today, also by the realization, in the autumn period, of various "village festivals", from Vulture to Pollino, attended by families coming mainly from outside the Region. The festivals of Melfi, Tramutola, Trecchina, San Fele remain very popular, just to name a few.

The chestnut wood has been for centuries an important source of livelihood in peasant civilization, but the value of the chestnut has always been the fruit; it is no coincidence that in ancient times it was also called bread tree with a fundamental role in the mountain economy until a few decades ago, even if the gastronomy linked to chestnuts, both fresh and dried, has been able to preserve the memory in the recipes, which now find ample space in the menus of the restaurants, trattorias and patisseries typical of the Region. It is no coincidence that in autumn, from Melfese to Lagonegrese, from Pollino to the park of Val d'Agri, the chestnut woods are frequented by hundreds of tourists in search of chestnut urchins, involuntarily favoring, through these do-it-yourself itineraries, the rediscovery of natural paths, beautiful views, autumn colors that only a region like Basilicata can offer.

The pomegranate is a fruit native to Asia Minor: it comes from an ancient plant that came here from the Phoenicians, but originally from western Asia and northern Africa. Today it is cultivated in the Mediterranean area and we also find traces of it in America. Pomegranates are round, red fruits. They feature a white inner flesh that’s densely packed with crunchy ,juicy edible seeds called arils. They may be best known for the vibrantly colored juice they’re often used in, but these unique fruits have a lot more to offer. With the potential to support many aspects of health, from immunity to brain health, pomegranates are worth adding to your healthy eating routine.

The pomegranate is also in several Greek myths as a symbol of fertility and abundance. In the myth of Dionysus: the pomegranate tree is born from the blood of the god, kidnapped and torn to pieces by the Titans.

Goodbye mood swings - Emotions will no longer be a problem, thanks to the high concentration of vitamin E, vitamin C, contained in the pomegranate fruit.

The Loricate Pine (Pinus leucodermis) is a conifer of the Calabrian territory.
Calabria is the only Italian region, together with Basilicata, to host stable populations of this prehistoric giant.
The loricate pine grows exclusively on the Pollino Massif and the Orsomarso Mountains, spreading like wildfire from the ridges of Monte Alpi to the western ridge of Montea; where it tends to grow in inaccessible places, generally between 1000 and 2100 metres above sea level; although in the Gulf of Serra, in the Argentino Valley, it descends to an altitude of 535 metres. It is a solitary species, but in some parts of its range, such as Serra di Crispo, Serra delle Ciavole and Belvedere di Malvento, it forms small sparse woods in which each specimen always grows at a certain distance from the others, except for those that grow in pairs.
The Loricate Pines are conifers belonging to the pinaceae family. They owe their name to the peculiar thick grey-brownish bark, which splits into broad scales as the plant matures, giving the trunk an appearance similar to that of the scaly lorica that was worn by certain categories of legionaries in ancient Rome. The leaves are paired needle-like. The male flowers are yellow cones, while the female flowers are globular. The fruits are bluish cones and turn brown as they ripen. Loricate Pines are considered living fossils.
Their presence in Calabria and Basilicata was first reported in 1905 by the Calabrian naturalist Biagio Longo of Laino Borgo, who also gave them the name Pino Loricato.

Students from Class III D, Secondary school of SAN FELE- ITALY

This has a direct impact in two ways:

The reduction of emissions in its commercialisation. The bananas from the Canary Islands travel 4 days to the mainland of Spain, while the bananas from Latin America usually travel 18 days before reaching Europe.

Farmers do not have to harvest the fruit prematurely. They can leave it on the plant longer until it reaches optimum ripeness, and this has a direct impact on its flavour and aroma.

Two species of wheat are cultivated in Greece: Triticum durum (hard wheat) or hard wheat used in pasta making and Triticum aestivum (soft wheat) or soft wheat used to make bread. The species Triticum durum is the main cultivated durum wheat. It has compact, usually aganiform spikes, with flattened sides and narrower faces. Each raceme bears 5-7 flowers from which 2-4 seeds are produced. The section of the grain has a glossy appearance due to the high content of flour grains. Its flour is used to make spaghetti. The species Triticum aestivum (soft wheat) or soft wheat bears 5-9 flowers in each spikelet, which give 3-4 seeds. It is the most widespread soft wheat and has thousands of varieties. It is the most suitable for baking, due to the quality of the gliin, which the proteins of the outer layer of the endosperm give.
