I always keep the "what can you do with this info/tool/skill after you leave class?" question in mind and regularly address it with classes. So, we do a lot of WBL/authentic learning in our ESL classes. Most of this (at my low intermediate level) is learning soft skills and being able to communicate professionally: writing emails, speaking on the telephone; writing professional texts to supervisors/clients. I have also invited guest speakers from Technology Career Institute and other places offering certificates for students.

My big idea was to incorporate WBL throughout a course each week, but I want to ease into it. I have an activity planned in my intro sociology class that gets students to apply any and all of the material we covered in the course and how it could help them in their dream careers and jobs. Topics include race, ethnicity, gender, deviance, social change, among many others. Still fine-tuning it, but it's something I'm working on
