By: Maeve O'Meara
Summary:

In the article, "Spuds or Duds," the author teaches us how genetic engineering is helpful and supports space exploration because it provides a food source for astronauts. The scientists have been doing tests and experiments on a potato spud that has been combined with many genotypes to take on the harsh conditions of Mars. The experiment has two purposes, to find out which vegetable can best cope to climate change and to identify a vegetable that can provide for astronauts. One scientist, Jan Krueze, believes that eventually growing potatoes on Mars is possible.
Vocabulary:

Extraterrestrial: from outside the earth or its atmosphere

Astrobiologist: scientist who studies the universe

Resilience: the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties

Germination: the process of something coming into existence and developing.

Link:

https://newsela.com/read/mars-potatoes/id/157
Image:

Is it Time to Label GMO Foods

In the article, Newsela teaches us that as the use of GMOs in food is increasing many Americans are worried about the chemicals being put into their foods by big companies. The use of GMOs in the United States is dramatically increasing and destroying our plants. Chemicals such as glyphosate and other herbicides fight off pests but they aren't good for the plants. If these big chemicals are destroying the plants are they actually okay to eat. Many people want their food products labeled in fact, a New York Times poll found that 93% of people want GMOs labeled. This proves that we need new laws about GMOs.
Vocabulary:
Genetic engineering- The modification of an organism by manipulating its genetic material
Pesticides- A chemical used for destroying insects harmful to cultivated plants or to animals.
Link:
https://newsela.com/read/foodlabel-procon/id/12799/

summary:
The DEA has recently approved gm salmon for consumption by consumers. The gm fish makes them bigger so they produce more product for people to eat. The theory is make the fish twice as big, then you could feed twice the people. This means that if the fish are twice as big then you could feed twice the people because there is more product. this gm fish grows twice as fast as regular fish and makes twice the meet.

Summary:
In the article, Newsela teaches us that genetic engineering is not harmful to you and that it is actually very save to consume. it is good because it helps the potato chip industry because it keeps them from expiring, it helps farmer avoid diseases in their crops, also they stay on shelf longer, and they are approved by the FDA. all of these could benefit consumers and producers.
