1) At first, train service was slow and several trips had to be made to be able to accommodate its passengers because the capacity of the trains were not high.
2) At first in Singapore, there were only 2 lines(the North-South and the East-West lines). Now, there are 6 lines and many more stations.
3) At first, trains were built on the ground but now, trains are built underground so there is more space to build other facilities above ground.
4) At first, there were also many train breakdowns. However, now, trains are definitely more safe, and therefore trains breakdowns are rarer these days.

(I can't believe I'm making this when my battery is 15%)
Back in the day, trains were steam powered, and required tons of manpower and manning to function. Plus, the old-school train tracks and rails often malfunctioned and train disasters were common back in the day. Besides, the trains were very slow.
Now, trains need little manpower. They are often manned not using steam but by electricity, hence travelling faster than the trains back in day. Although the capacity, convenience and speed were much better than trains, breakdowns are common and can cause congestion between commuters, often delaying their timing to go to work etc.
However, when compared, trains now compared to back then have much more reliability, and the fatality rate is much lower (though train disasters still are common!). If I had to choose, I would choose the trains now.

(I am not saying that the trains nowadays are SUPER spacious , sometimes , the trains are not even big enough for all their passengers to fit!)Also last time the trains were EXTREMELY slow , that was probably why they hadn't called it MASS RAPID TRANSIT , it wasn't rapid at all! Moreover, the rails often broke down, so what is the difference between the trains and the cars ? Both are slow !(cars go through traffic jams and trains go through break downs)

Used for commuters to get from place to place quickly and efficiently.
2. Steam Powered Trains
Though outdated, many people still enjoy riding Steam Powered Trains today. Usually for taking nice trips round a country for scenic sights, or getting from one land to another.
3. Our MRT
Also known as Mass Rapid Transit, its name is self-explanatory. It is Singapore's main form of public transport (besides Taxis and Buses). Built and designed like the Bullet Train, it is supposed to pick up commuters en masse at a MRT station and supposed to transport them at rapid speeds. The MRT is built for large capacities. However, our dear MRT has flaws. Although built for large capacities of commuters, it still can get pretty cramped and crowded in there. Besides, our MRT is infamous for its frequent breakdowns.

Back in the olden days, trains were slow, sluggish, inconvenient for some. (sigh) Anyways, technology has helped dem dere poor trains. With electricity and some helpful science and technology, our trains are now powered by electricity or some other thing that isn't as troublesome as steam and is less 'dangerous'. Apologies if this was a little short, I kinda said everything in the first answer. Moving on! Train tracks are now not required to be monitored 24/7. Instead, reliable train tracks or even magnetic tracks have replaced the cumbersome old ones.
well, that's all. you wanna see more? go to my first replies, potatoes.
thanks for reading!

1. MRT
This MRT can be found in Singapore and it is very useful for us. It is one of our mode of transportation
2. Shinkansen
The Shinkansen can be found in Japan. It is commonly known as the bullet train in English. It was initially built to connect distant Japanese regions with Tokyo in order to aid economic growth and development , beyond long-distance travel it is now also used as a commuter rail network.

Here is the link to a map:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/60/JNR_SystemMap_19641001.png/2560px-JNR_SystemMap_19641001.png
3.LRT
Th LRT stands for the Light Rapid Transit which is also one of the mode of transports in Singapore . It only has two cubicles connected together so it is very squeezy especially during peak hours . More people take the MRT than the LRT in Singapore as it has lesser space in it.
4.Steam locomotive
The steam locomotive is a type of railway locomotive that produces its pulling power through a steam engine. These locomotives are fueled by burning combustible material – usually coal, wood, or oil – to produce steam in a boiler. The steam moves reciprocating pistons which are mechanically connected to the locomotive's main wheels (drivers).

I think the purpose of these trains are to give a mode of transportation to people and to give them convenience. People can get to their destination faster with these trains compared to walking.

However, commuter rail systems like Caltrain and Metrolink can run trains all day in both directions.

Rapid transit

Rapid transit, which is also known as metro, subway, and heavy rail, mean trains that generally serve the urban-core, have large passenger capacity, and operate totally separate from road traffic. In order to run separately from road traffic in the city-core, rapid transit trains would run either above or underground.

Light rail

Sacramento LRT

Light rail, which might be also known as trolley and streetcars, mean trains that function as local transit in an urban-core and can operate on the street-level. Compared to rapid transit, light rail costs less, is more pedestrian friendly, but has less passenger capacity. The major advantage with light rail is that it can operate like rapid transit or like local buses, depending on the available infrastructure.

source:http://www.bayrailalliance.org/types_trains

The term is also used to describe the beam of the system, or the trains traveling on such a beam or track.
---------------------------------------------------------
Maglev
--------------
Maglev is a system of train transportation that uses two sets of magnets, one set to repel and push the train up off the track as in levitation (hence Maglev, Magnetic-levitation), then another set to move the 'floating train' ahead at great speed taking advantage of the lack of friction. Within certain "medium range" locations (usually between 200-400 miles) Maglev can compete favorably with high speed rail and airplanes.
---------------------------------------------------------
TGV
--------
The TGV is France's intercity high-speed rail service, operated by the SNCF, the national rail operator.
---------------------------------------------------------

Locomotive
--------------------

A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. If a locomotive is capable of carrying a payload, it is usually rather referred to as multiple units, motor coaches, railcars or power cars; the use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight.Traditionally, locomotives pulled trains from the front. However, push-pull operation has become common, where the train may have a locomotive (or locomotives) at the front, at the rear, or at each end.

Distant lands become almost instantly reachable (3000 miles journey from New York to California was cut down from one or two months to few days!), industrial manufacture could be powered with infinite amount of raw materials and outgoing transport of finished goods, and sudden fast travel (far before first airplanes were discovered) caused the need of implementing standardized time zones across entire world.
Today, trains are used in variety of ways – from small city trams, subway electric trains, distance trains (equipped with dining cars and sleeping quarters for longer journeys), freight trains, to high-speed bullet trains that can reach speeds of 300-500 kilometers per hour.

In the 19 century, New York City had elevated trains. They were steam-powered cars which were constructed from wood and were modeled on the western train cars of the time.

In 1904, a company opened the first underground subway lines. After one of those wooden cars crashed in a subway tunnel near Prospect Park, killing 93 passengers, the company's “Composite” cars, as they were called, featured wooden bodies sheathed in copper and coaches with fabric seats that were secured to a steel underframe. The cars were spacious, but there were only two set of doors on either side of the cars where passengers could board and exit the train. The conductor had to manually open and close gates in each station for on and off-boarding.The cars were modified in 1910 to include a center door but otherwise remained the same until they were replaced by all-steel cars. Soon, the company offered more standing area in the cars. In 1915, another company presented the “Standard,” a subway car with steel bodies that were wider and longer than the first company's cars. Standards also had more standing room, brighter lights, and bigger windows than the first company’s stainless steel subway cars.

In 1932, the city opened its own subway line. Then, a third company created another type of train(aka City Cars). They were initially painted a dull green—fitting, considering they were rolled out during the Great Depression—and were the first cars to introduce four doors on each side, speeding up the loading and unloading process at each station.

In the 1950s, the first air-conditioned subway was created in New York. Unfortunately, the air-conditioners dripped water and had wet the passengers and the train. Eventually air conditioning was removed and replaced with conventional fans since it was too costly to keep up with the many repairs they required on a regular basis. In 1966, the R-38(a type of train) was the first fleet of subway cars to offer air conditioning that actually worked.

In the 1970s, some trains were introduced during this period and fitted with plastic seats, but many of the cars were faulty and required constant repairs. This is also the era in which subway cars served as a canvas for graffiti artists—important for New York’s cultural history, but not exactly beloved by the transit authority. By the 1980s, more reliable cars were introduced.

Graffiti was still rampant and almost every car in the subway system was tagged, forcing the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) to launch a five-year initiative in 1984 to eradicate all graffitied trains. On May 12, 1989, the city announced that all graffiti had been wiped away from the system’s fleet. To this day, trains are not allowed to leave their yards if there is any graffiti on its exterior.

in the 2000s, new models featured technology that included an electronic strip map and an improved public address system were added

1)The first ever made trains were wagons pulled by horses on wooden railways.
2)The second type was also something like a wagon, but accept it is made out metal. The metal wheels gave the wagon an extra grip on the metal tracks and it was also more stable then the previous wagon. But the use of horses to pull the wagons were still needed.
3)The third type is called the steam train. It is much more effective than the wagon types. But the bad thing is, the steam train is very slow, and sometimes will break down, causing passengers on the train to not reach their destination on time. The steam coming out of the train might also pollute the air and harm the environment.
4)And the fourth type, which we all know now days, are the types that are spacious, do not harm the environment, do not break down easily and travels at an extremely fast speed

Last time, there were only five stations in the MRT system. Now, we are quite lucky to have 119 stations in the MRT system.

2. Bullet Trains
Modern day bullet trains are very fast and their train systems can connect all the different states of a country in one railway or take us to different places conveniently. They are environmentally friendly and are powered by electricity or even magnetism! Those bullet trains which are powered by magnetism are called Maglev Trains.

The speed of bullet trains is about 320 km/h. Technology has made it possible for bullet trains to go this fast.

3. Steam powered trains
They are used to transport heavy goods using cargos. Steam trains are not that environmentally friendly, unfortunately. Steam trains work using a boiler that contains water that the fire (made with coal) heats it up to make steam. Steam from the boiler is piped into the cylinder, causing the piston to move first one way then the other. Lastly, a machine is attached to the piston so you will see steam coming from the train’s chimney. Nowadays, these trains are not oftenly used.

In the 1960s, before he became President of SNCF (and subsequently President of UIC), Louis Armand said, ‘The railway will be the mode of transport for the 21st century if it survives the 20th.’ We have now turned the corner into the 21st century and rail transport in Europe is perhaps more alive than ever.
The railway's history over the last 50 years has been punctuated by major technological changes and this article reviews the highlights and shows how the changes were serious gambles in preparing for the 21st century.
The leap in the popularity of high-speed trains (250–300 km/h) played a key role in this evolution, which is both irreversible and fundamental to passenger transport in Europe. Much of this article is about high speed and there are two information boxes on the evolution of high speed in Germany, and on the development of Italy's famous Pendolino technology that has now conquered most of Europe.
Due to its major role in Europe's progress in rail transport, I will discuss changes in electrical power techniques, traction and signalling. Part of this article examines the design and construction of carriage bodies and some pages cover the impact (which are still largely to come) of electronics and digital techniques on railway engineering. Finally, I will touch on rail freight, which has not yet taken advantage of the technological changes in Europe.

I had taken information from this website:http://www.ejrcf.or.jp/jrtr/jrtr27/f25_lac.html

High speed trains generally connect large metropolitan areas and are meant to be competitive with airlines in terms of overall travel time.
Some countries like south korea , taiwan , japan are using these high speed trains.

2 Intercity trains
nter-city trains generally mean trains traveling long distances connecting metropolitan areas. Although the distances covered by some of these trains are comparable to airlines, inter-city trains generally operate at highway speed.

3 Mass Rapid Transit
mass rapid transit are trains that generally serve the urban-core, have large passenger capacity, and operate totally separate from road traffic. In order to run separately from road traffic in the city-core, rapid transit trains would run either above or underground.

You can find out more at this website :
http://www.bayrailalliance.org/types_trains
;)

This not only adds on to the heavy weight of the train, but also, there is a fire threat when coal is burnt for fuel. Now, trains are powered by diesel locomotives that are actually diesel electric generators and tis is much more convenient, and it will not pose any fire threats or danger to the commuters on the train.

History of the modern trains spans the range of last two hundred years of modern human civilization, who in that time used this incredible discovery to drastically change industry, human expansion, and the way we travel on daily basis.

1) BEFORE---the first time steam train rolled over the railways of industrial England in early 1800s
DESCRIPTION

steam locomotive is a type of railway locomotive that produces its pulling power through a steam engine. These locomotives are fueled by burning combustible material – usually coal, wood, or oil – to produce steam in a boiler. The steam moves reciprocating pistons which are mechanically connected to the locomotive's main wheels (drivers). Both fuel and water supplies are carried with the locomotive, either on the locomotive itself or in wagons (tenders) pulled behind.

Steam locomotives were first developed in Great Britain during the early 19th century and used for railway transport until the middle of the 20th century. The first steam locomotive, made by Richard Trevithick, first operated on 21 February 1804, three years after the road locomotive he made in 1801. The first commercially successful steam locomotive was created in 1812–13 by John Blenkinsop.[1] Built by George Stephenson and his son Robert's company Robert Stephenson and Company, the Locomotion No. 1 is the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. George also built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use locomotives, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830. Stephenson established his company as the pre-eminent builder of steam locomotives for railways in the United Kingdom, the United States, and much of Europe.[2]
</sup>

In the 20th century, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Nigel Gresley designed some of the most famous locomotives, including the Flying Scotsman, the first steam locomotive officially recorded over 100 mph in passenger service, and a LNER Class A4, 4468 Mallard, which still holds the record for being the fastest steam locomotive in the world (126 mph).[3]
</sup>

From the early 1900s steam locomotives were gradually superseded by electric and diesel locomotives, with railways fully converting to electric and diesel power beginning in the late 1930s. The majority of steam locomotives were retired from regular service by the 1980s, though several continue to run on tourist and heritage lines.
2)--- In the modern times bullet trains carry thousands of passengers with incredible speeds and freight train carry substantial amount of worlds goods, trains enabled us to develop our civilization with unexpected consequences that nobody expected.

In North America, Amtrak’s Acela (Boston – Washington DC) meets the definition of of high speed rail, but uses heavier trainsets than its European and Asian counterparts.

The proposed high speed rail system in California would use trainsets similar to those in Europe and Asia.

2)
Inter-city trains

Inter-city trains generally mean trains traveling long distances connecting metropolitan areas. Although the distances covered by some of these trains are comparable to airlines, inter-city trains generally operate at highway speed. Long distance inter-city trains may provide amenities not found on most other forms of transportation, including sleeper-cars and cafe/dining cars.

Amtrak is the operator of inter-city trains in the United States. Although Amtrak is much slower than airlines, inter-city trains serve small cities between metropolitan areas aren’t served by airlines.

Historically, inter-city passenger trains are operated by railroad companies that also haul freight trains. After World War II, ridership on passenger trains steadily declined with competition from automobiles and airlines. At that time, many railroads wanted to abandon passenger train service to cut operating losses. In 1971, Amtrak was established by Congress to nationalize inter-city passenger rail business. Outside the Northeast Corridor (Boston and DC), Amtrak uses tracks owned by various freight railroads.

3)
Commuter/regional trains

<del>

</del>Caltrain locomotives (Source)

Commuter trains generally mean trains connecting suburban areas with the central city and primarily serves riders to and from work. Commuter trains typically run on weekdays, during rush hours, and only in the peak directions. A prime example would be Altamont Commuter Express, which run from Stockton to San Jose during weekday mornings, and from San Jose to Stockion during weekday afternoons. However, commuter rail systems like Caltrain and Metrolink can run trains all day in both directions.

In the United States, typical commuter trains are locomotive-haul. The locomotive on one end of the train either pulls the unpowered passenger cars (from the front) or pushes them (from the back) to make them move. Most locomotives are powered by diesel fuel and some (in the East Coast) by electricity.

Many commuter trains in Europe, as well as some in the U.S. use electric multiple units instead of locomotives. In a multiple-unit train, every car (or every other car) in the train has motors which are capable of propelling the vehicle. Multiple unit trains are more reliable (with multiple engine/motors rather than one engine) and more efficient (by easily changing train length for peak and off-peak hours).

Proposed Caltrain EMU

Most commuter trains in the U.S. share tracks with Amtrak and freight trains, therefore they are subject to Federal Railroad Administration regulations. FRA regulations require commuter trains to be heavier (in the belief that heavier trains are safer) and less efficient than commuter trains in Europe.

BayRail Alliance goal is to improve Caltrain service by converting its power source from diesel to electric, and use light weight European style rail cars.
