At the age of 6, my mom decided to move the family and rent a barely furnished small apartment in TsingHua University as the new home is nearer to the primary school I attended to. Though my family wasn’t rich at the time, both my parents loves art and this picture was captured by my dad. The artistic photograph itself speaks my family’s emphasis in art and my close relationship with my parents, and it signifies our 9 year-stay at the small apartment until I graduated from middle school.

I joined ICARE, an international volunteer organization that provides free medical treatment to people in rural places in Gansu, China for the first time. I blew my mind, that I witnessed so many people even struggle for some basic needs, and a large portion of the villagers didn’t know their names. They were hard-working peasants, but they were just like living in another world. That was the first time that I realized what privilege and class means. I was astonished and was deeply moved that people could come together, for whatever means, to do good things and to push for change.

During the years, I rejoined ICARE again and again, and I started to think about how helpless we were. We might could gave them medicines for a week, or even a month? But as long as there’s no state sponsoring or building new hospitals or health centers, people’s healths are not gonna improve. But at the same time I also realized that change is taking place, that I found that there’s more and more young people become literate and could write, the local stores are better. There’re kids running around taking with us strangers, they seems more confident, and some of them could even speak English. I found that the village’s rural health service center is improving, from the first bare brick walls to concrete and cement, and some of the rooms even had pink wall paints.

Being in an international campus, I was one of many kids who studied English really hard and prepare for tests and application. However, my Chinese teacher urged me to found a Literature club to organize events and promote understanding of the history and the culture. I found out that Chinese class was one of the least favorite classes in our high school, and we didn’t have opportunities to write in our language really often, and our handwriting and reading ability were deteriorating. We organized several huge events with nearly two hundred audiences of other teachers, students and their parents. One of the most important quotes from my Chinese teacher was, “stand firm in the cultural turbulence”, meaning that we should never forget where we came from

Last summer I went to EXPLO as a instructor and residential advisor. In the camp, there were families that paid thousands of dollars for their kids to join, but there a handful of kids whose parents sent them to the camp because they couldn’t provide food for their kids. Interestingly, the kids seems to have no problem interacting with each other. In fact, they became one of the best friends with each other. While I was glad that all kids AT EXPLO were treated equally, I couldn’t stop thinking their lives when they’re back home or back to their own school. It also evoked me to think about critical issues in educations like resource distribution

While conducting cultural and educational studies research through a comparative lens, cultural dominance and personal bias still need to be taken into account. Guided by my TOC, school uniform and school climate is only a starting point or one tiny aspect that school may address along the way. But individual schools' actions and decisions matter.
