When his father returned home he was poisoned by the Tartars and then he was kidnapped but could escape by his great astusia and return home to claim his throne as leader. While they were going to the Chinese territory, Khan felt that his death was approaching so he distributed his territories to his 4 children. Genghis died on August 18, 1227, before achieving Chinese surrender, his last order was not to spread the news of his death until his entire empire has reached its destination. For 40 years his empire had become the center of the Asian world, after his death his empire managed to dominate all of this and a part of Europe. He was also a ruthless person who killed his half-brother by his father's throne and thus proclaimed himself the ruler of his tribe. He grew and his empire too, his forces opposed the best armies of his time. The type of leadership with which he managed his empire was Machiavellian, conspiratorial, ambitious and ruthless, so answering the question he was a monster but not a leader since a brilliant leader is not based only on contemplating violence to achieve your goal.
