While black ableism was not directly discussed or unpacked in class, we touched on lingering tensions of how black people with autism feel outcasted in the black community. My goal is to give insight to those who may not recognize their own ableist tendencies through sharing poetry, writing and video of members of the black autistic community addressing their concerns.     • Still finalizing these sources as I look through chapters and identify what may be useful. My hope is to utilize some of the poetry in All the Weight of Our Dreams for context/experiences/understanding of ableism through the lens of someone with autism. The other sources I believe will provide more theoretical and contextual descriptions of ableism to help me draw conclusions of how black ableism can create a great rift in the community. I also believe that with Ableism the Causes and Consequence of Disability Prejudice I will be able to provide a few solutions/recommendations based on the findings of the authors.

    This isn’t an attack on parents who long for speech in their children. Please don’t take it there. This is the exploration of my feelings when hope is assigned to my child’s ability to produce spoken words.

    It’s that this hope goes hand in hand with ableist structures. They hope he can speak one day because they view his life to be easier because of it. They hope he can speak one day because “I love you” just sounds more beautiful.

    Hope for my son’s speech is triggering for me. It’s not that I wouldn’t welcome speech if he ever did speak, it’s that I don’t hang his worth on it.

    He is just as beautiful and worthy without spoken words.🌿

    The 10 slide post outlines the story of a mother who goes to a disability center and sees another mother greeted by her son who says that he loves her. She talks about the emotions that flood her mind as she looks at a shared "aww" moment. As she's looking she talks about feelings of anger and sadness, not directed at the mother, but feelings that are within her. The observing mother's son doesn't speak, and as she desperately wanted to leave the room, her eyes met with the other mother. "My son doesn't speak," she says. "One day;" the other mother responds. 

    I thought this captured a moment where a moment seemingly so innocent actually carries weight, has gravity and as the caption states, is quite "triggering." Through my final project, I'm hoping to provide examples of how some of these seemingly innocent encounters could actually be damaging or create a rift between community members. The post doesn't offer a solution or an alternative, but rather speaks about how the mother refuses to hang her son's worth on whether he will speak or not.
