I think with the tough job of a special education teacher it is important for them to remember that each student has individual needs. There is not going to be one solution for all kids. When they are treated as individuals they will be more successful because they feel important.

When talking with the Special Education teacher at my school I found out a lot of useful information. She actually got her bachelor's degree in psychology. I thought this was very interesting because when diagnosing kids with disabilities the school phycologist is involved. I think having a background in that area would be helpful. She told me that she started off as a resource aide at the school where her son went years ago. Then she saw the role of the special education teacher at her school and decided to move to teaching. Her ideal class number is 5-6 kids at a time. With budget cuts and just not enough resource teachers her class sizes have gone up a lot! She now has double the amount of kids at a time and she said it makes it hard to give them the one on one attention they need and deserve.
I asked her what the most difficult part of being a special education teacher was and she said, scheduling there just aren't enough minutes in a day she claims. I also asked her what advice she would give to new teachers, both special and general education. She said the most important thing would be to reflect on your teaching. Being a reflective teacher means that you can look at a lesson and figure out what went good and what went horribly wrong and fix it for your next lesson. My last question for her was about her relationship with the general ed teachers. I wondered if it was easy to work with and collaborate with them, she said she works well with them.
