Quote 1:

“I can't change where I come from or what I've been through, so why should I be ashamed of what makes me, me?” – Starr Carter Meaning: Starr learns not to be ashamed of her place of birth and that she doesn't have to pretend to be someone else.
Why chosen? Since Enes is a proud Albanian and likes to show that openly, we could strongly identify with this quote. Topic: It shows that one should not be ashamed of their origin but should be proud of it. Quote 2: “Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.” – Starrs Vater, Maverick

Meaning: Even when you're treated unfairly, you should do what is right and not give up. Why chosen? Because Enes and I have often been unfairly graded or judged, we fully stand behind this quote.Topic: Activism / Justice – It reflects the fight against racism and for change. Quote 3: “Thug Life – The Hate U Give Little Infants F*s Everybody” – Tupac** Meaning: The hate that children experience early on affects society as a whole. Why chosen? We have personally seen how children who experienced negativity in their childhood often developed in a negative way as well.

Topic: Racism / Social Injustice – Systematic disadvantage begins in childhood.

<s>By Ilyas and Enes</s>

Film Review – The Hate U Give By Ilyas and Enes We watched the movie The Hate U Give at our Crib. It was very emotional and sad. The story is about Starr, a black girl who see her friend Khalil get shot by a police. She is very scared but later she speak up and fight for justice. We think the movie is very strong. It show how hard it is for black people in America. We liked the characters, especially Starr and her dad. Sometimes the movie was also funny, but most time it was serious. We think everybody should watch it. It teach a important message. We give it 5 stars.

March 7

Dear Diary,
i honestly dont even know where to begin. i cantt stop thinking about Khalil. One second he was smiling and joking with me, and the next… he was gone. The sound of those gunshots keeps playing in my head over and over. I have never been that scared in my life. Why did the cop shot him? Khalil didn’t do anything wrong. He didn’t deserve that. I feel heartbroken. And angry. But most of all, I’m scared. What if people at school find out I was there? What if they judge me?

March 9
Dear Diary,
Still, no one at school is talking about what happened to Khalil. It’s like he never mattered to anyone there. Not even a mention on the news or in class. And then Hailey… she said something that made me want to scream. She actually said, “Maybe he had it coming.” I couldn’t believe it. I felt sick. But I didn’t say anything. I just smiled and walked away.

March 12
Dear Diary,
Today I talked to Mom and Uncle Carlos. I wanna speak up. I want people to know who Khalil really was. Not a drug dealer. He was my friend. My family. I’m really scared, but it feels worse to stay quiet forever. Maybe it’s time I use my voice.

March 20
Dear Diary,
I spoke in front of the grand jury today. My hands was shaking so bad, but I did it. I told them the truth. That Khalil wasn’t dangerous. It was hard, but I felt strong after. I think Khalil would be proud of me. Maybe I’m finally being the real me.

April 10
Dear Diary,
The jury said the cop wont be charged no justice. It hurts so much. We went out to protest. i took the megaphone and talked to everybody. My voice was loud, even if I was scared. But I’m proud too. I’m still scared sometimes… but I won’t be quiet anymore. Not for Khalil. Not for me.

Love, Starr

March 15

Dear Diary,

Today I went to Big D’s party with Kenya. I didn’t really want to go, but I didn’t want to say no to her. At the party, I saw Khalil. We haven’t talked in a long time, but it was nice to see him again. He smiled at me like old times. Then we heard gunshots and had to run. Khalil took me home in his car. I felt safe with him. We laughed and talked. But something terrible happened. A police officer stopped us. Khalil didn’t do anything wrong, but the officer shot him. I still see it in my head. I’m so scared.

-Starr

March 18

Dear Diary,

The police are saying Khalil was a drug dealer. That’s not fair. Even if it’s true, it doesn’t mean he deserved to die. I didn’t tell anyone I was the witness. Only my family knows. I feel so lost. At school, I pretend everything is fine. I have to be “Starr 2” — quiet, nice, not too Black. But at home, I’m angry. Why does the world see us like this? Why do they think Khalil was just a “thug”?

-Starr

March 30

Dear Diary,

Today, I talked to the detectives. I told them what happened that night. It was hard, but I needed to speak the truth. I also met with a lawyer. They want me to speak to the grand jury. I don’t know if I can do it. I’m scared. What if people get mad at me? What if they don’t believe me? But if I stay silent, Khalil won’t get justice.

-Starr

April 7

Dear Diary,

Chris wants to help me, but he doesn’t understand. He tries, but he will never know what it’s like to be me. I feel like I’m always in two worlds — Garden Heights and Williamson. I don’t fit in either place. But maybe it’s time to stop hiding. I want to be the real Starr.

-Starr

April 20

Dear Diary,

The grand jury didn’t charge the officer. I’m so angry. Khalil got no justice. But today, I spoke at the protest. I shouted his name. I’m not afraid anymore. My voice matters. I will keep fighting — for Khalil, for myself, for our future.

-Starr

Reflection – Working on "The Hate U Give" Project

In the first week, I worked together with Enes. Because I wasn't in class when we watched the movie, we watched The Hate U Give together at my home. After watching, we talked about the film, our first impressions, and shared thoughts and feelings. It was emotional and powerful for both of us.

In the second week, we started doing research about the film and its background. We looked for quotes and important scenes. We also used ChatGPT to help us find strong quotes and understand their meanings. Then, we analyzed the quotes ourselves and explained what they showed about racism, injustice, and activism. This helped us understand the deeper message of the film.

In the third week, we began creating our Padlet. While I added the quotes, Enes created the mindmap. It was a good way to split the work. In week four, we recorded our podcast and finished our fact sheet, the diary entries, and this reflection.

We worked together regularly, mostly during school time and sometimes at home. We used different tools like ChatGPT, Google, and the Padlet app. The support from each other helped a lot.

I think we reached our goal. With our Padlet, we wanted to show how the film connects to real problems like police violence and racism. We also wanted to show how people can fight for justice using their voice.

I think with this lernatellier we improofed ourselves did almost everything on our own and are happy with the endproduct we hope for a good grade (1)
