Cadence and her family are all rich and living off Harris. Harris has three daughters, and even though he has done everything and anything to help them, guide them and try to make them independent, they never make their own fortune and continue feeding of his instead. At the same time, they are full of pride and discriminate the people that aren't like them An example that is not necessarily of the girls, however, from whom they learned their behavior is when Tipper says that it was "a nice surprise" to meet Ed even though she knew he was coming. Ed responds by asking with the "didn't Carrie tell you we were coming?" The privilege and the way they treat others only ends with their children dying.

The reality of our memories
We have sad and happy moments in our lives. Happy moments, we try to cherish and remember. When it is sad or upsetting moments, we try to forget and move on. By accepting that Cadence is an unreliable narrator the book is already affected the story and that means that as long as Cadance is our narrator the story is affected and her memory is not trustworthy. Cadence is not aware that she has forgotten something more important than she thought. She has forgotten a memory.
When we say that we have forgotten the memory, it is possible that we are avoiding it, like Cadence is. However, it seems as though instead of avoiding it, it seems as though her subconscious is trying to protect her. All tough Cadance is not avoiding a situation she is still affected by the sadness of something, and it almost kills her. When we avoid the situation, we might forget about the sadness, but it keeps haunting us in ways that are impossible to comprehend.

After reading a beginning like that one usually starts to wonder what has this person done, one could almost become desperate to know. The author starts sending us towards tragedy.

Texts help with insights into a part of the world that someone may never experience. Texts can give people comfort and warnings into the real world. Texts can even be a guide for people through life and culture.

Texts from different times can help us reflect on our mistakes from the past. Texts can also be guides to help us continue with something we perfected in the past. 

“He knows he’s not supposed to be that guy. He’s a Democrat, he voted for Obama—but that doesn’t mean he’s comfortable having people of colour in his beautiful family.”

From this quote one can easily discuss the social issues addressed in this book, racism, and the problem with these "champagne democrats". Urban dictionary calls a champagne democrat: "A person who identifies themselves with the American left-wing political movement while hypocritically exhibiting financial and social behaviour to the contrary. Often found in affluent upper middle-class communities across the United States."

Example: "That Champagne Democrat would vote for John Kerry in the presidential elections, but ask for a tax write-off when making a negligible donation to charity.

Sounds like something Harris would do no? ^



When Cadence calls out her grandfather for being racist that is probably the most racist thing said in the book.  The book attempts to take a serious hold on racism and class issues but fails miserably, therefore it never truly deals with any issue at all.
The only way this book addresses racism is through extremely covert racism.

"Covert racism is racial discrimination that is concealed or subtle rather than obvious or public (Coates & Morrison, 2011).


- Acts to subvert, distort, restrict, and deny racial minorities access to societal privileges and benefits 
- A key feature of covert racism is that its disguised nature allows perpetrators to claim "plausible deniability" and to essentially gaslight their victims, that is to deny that the act was racist and undermine any claim of harm 
- May be implicit as a result of unconscious bias that exist within an individual, regardless of ill-will or any self-aware prejudices"
