Success criteria is crucial for student growth. Students and the teacher need success criteria from the start. Clear is Kind!

Go ahead and let the students know what the end goal looks like. They need to know what success looks like in the beginning

Let students know the goal and let them work toward it. Showing them what success looks like, allowing us to handle any issues.

When determining success criteria, does it look the same for every student in the class, regardless of their abilities?

While this isn't common, I think this could be beneficial for my 5th grade math students. If I can show them up front what success looks like, then they can begin to model their answers after what they want to achieve!

I love the idea of showing them what "success" looks like. I feel this is done a lot in writing when we actively model a shared writing. The students can then use that writing as a template for their own. Math is modeled, however, it is trickier. I love the idea of giving the answer first on a couple of problems. This allows the student to focus on the strategy versus the final answer.

I frequently provide my students with rubrics and checklists, and have conversations around them and what they mean for success criteria. However, I still struggle to get them to look at either of those tools let alone use them. So the question becomes, how do you get by-in from high school students to get them to actually use the tools you are providing?

Understanding and being intentional about success criteria tends to make learning more efficient.
