PICOT Question by McCully, Rose

In Nurses working in a hospital medical-surgical units caring for adult patients between ages 18 and 96 with new-onset of seizure disorder (P), how do the implementations of evidence-based standardized seizure protocols (I) compare with routine care in the same setting without evidence base standard protocols (C), affect the nurses’ response time seizure events (O) throughout 5 month period (T)?

I used Journal of Neuroscience Nursing for my dissemination project because the Journal of Neuroscience is the official publication of the American Association of Nueroscience Nurses (AANN) and is dedicated to advancing nursing practice in neurological conditions, including epilepsy and seizure disorders. Based on my PICOT question, which explores the implementation of evidence-based seizure protocols (EBS) in acute care settings, such as the med-surg unit, directly addressing the care of neurological patients. Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN) readers or audience, including nurse educators, neuroscience nurses, clinical leaders and administrators, and researchers, would benefit from practical, evidence-based strategies and insights aimed at improving seizure response times, recognition, and patient outcomes. Publishing in the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN) ensures that manuscripts and findings are shared with professional researchers who can apply them in real-world clinical settings (Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, n.d.).

Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN) recently published an article titled “Development of an Epilepsy Nursing Communication Tool: Improving the Quality of Interactions Between Nurses and Patients with Seizures.” As I read the article, it demonstrated active involvement in clinical tools that enhance and support the implementation of better seizure care and protocol. This aligns with my PICOT question because the research article focuses on implementing standardised nursing protocols to enhance seizure cognition and responses. The article also highlighted the impact of structured communication and how it improves patient outcomes, while reinforcing the importance of using evidence-based practices in response to new-onset seizure disorders or other neurologic conditions. The Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN) publication of this article highlights the importance of sharing innovation in seizure-related nursing research and practice.

One significant challenge I foresee if I were to prepare a manuscript for submission to the Journal of Nursing is the strict formatting requirements of the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN). If I were someone with limited experience in academic publishing, using clear sections like introduction, methods, and discussions would feel overwhelming. My study regarding seizure protocols contains comprehensive interventions and multiple settings, condensing all vital information while staying within their word limits would pose a significant challenge. Careful editing and planning will be necessary for me to meet these standards (Neuronurse, n.d.).

Another challenge I would face is explaining my research methods and the ethical steps I took appropriately. I need to write a strong detail on how I make my research methods, including expert and input testing. I also need to describe how the nurses who volunteered in my study were chosen, how the protocols were used, their outcomes, response times measured, and the analyses I conducted. I also need to ensure that I include all the necessary ethical details, such as IRB approval and consent forms. Without clear and detailed explanations of my study, the credibility and chances of my research being approved and published may be affected or ultimately denied. Overall, I need to ensure my content is clear and organized (Neuronurse, n.d.).
