I know that life in Aoteroa is different to other places because the only predators have been introduced, it is kind of isolated to the rest of the world, Maori is only spoken here (nowhere else). Our birds here are different because they have adapted and evolutionized to not having big predators chasing and hunting them down, many becoming flightless. We also have different climates to other countries so they have had to adapt to that. These birds used to be able to roam around more freely without it being as much of a risk as is now.

Evolution is something that takes a long time. Our ancestors from a few thousand years ago would have looked quite similar to us. They would have had arms, legs, brain and even body similar to ours. But many years before that humans would look like a monkey. These changes happen over many years, like thousands or even millions of years. Every species in this world has had to adjust in some form or way.

The Tuatara developed small adaptation because they had to deal with a change in climate and be able to withstand colder temperatures, live in a native forest, and catch many different prey. Since there was a lack of mammals the tuatara could thrive much easier. Since this threat wasn't there they didn't really need to change very much.

The Kiwi adapted to New Zealand's unique conditions because there wasn't any ground-based predators meaning they could spend more time on the forest floors looking for worms and insects. And since it didn't need to use it's wings as often it developed a long beak, big body, and strong legs. This now making it flightless like many other New Zealand natives.
