Diário de participação #1 (week two)

In the past week we had two classes with very interesting topics and activities, but there are two things that were really significant to me.

First of all, the group dynamics in both classes. Because of the way the groups were separated I got the chance to talk to new people and listen to different stories and points of view, which was really fun and helped me to socialize.

Secondly, during the discussion about Paulo Freire's letter, we talked about the idea of sharing knowledge inside a classroom, and not only the teacher speaking and the students listening. For me that was a very interesting discussion because a lot of times during school years I had teachers who punished students for trying to say an opinion or ask questions during class, and I never thought that was good or helpful for learning in any way.

In the classes we had during week three we discussed some beliefs about teaching and learning. My group got "learners need choice". I think this belief opens space for a very interesting discussion, because it is necessary to give students the chance of choosing certain things during the learning process but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a challenge as a teacher to find the best moments and the opportunities to give those choices. When you are inside of a classroom with a schedule to follow sometimes it's easy to do things mechanically, but we need to remember that our job has a significant impact on others people lives, therefore, when planning a class or an activity we have to take in consideration that we are dealing with different people in all the possible ways, and that they will learn differently as well.

Other belief that was the most significant to me was "learning is social". I really agree with this one especially because since I into got into high school I started seeing school as an educational space not only for scientific knowledge but also social knowledge. It is probably the place we spent most of our time during childhood and teenage years, besides it's most likely to be our first contact with people outside our families. As teachers we are going to deal with a lot more than just teaching a subject, we are going to deal with the social aspects of our classrooms, and might be a challenge but it also one of the best things about being a teacher for me, talking to the students, helping them, seeing them becoming friends and developing themselves, that is beautiful to be a part of.

Na aula do dia 24, após lermos a quarta carta de Paulo Freire, conversamos um pouco sobre as qualidades necessárias para um professor. A qualidade do meu grupo foi " amorosidade ". Eu acredito que a discussão sobre essa qualidade seja muito pertinente, pois quando falamos sobre a profissão do professor, muitas vezes, escutamos o discurso de que para exercer a profissão é preciso amá-la devido as várias dificuldades e falta de valorização, e embora isso não seja mentira precisamos diferenciar o amor pela profissão da aceitação e alienação aos problemas. Podemos amar o que fazemos e ao mesmo tempo ter o pensamento crítico para realizarmos mudanças e denúncias quando necessário. Não é porque amamos o que fazemos que devemos aceitar desrespeito ou desvalorização.

Durante a aula do dia 28, nos falamos sobre um pouco da história do Brasil principalmente sobre o surgimento das ecolas militares e cívico-militar. Foi extremamente interessante observar como mesmo depois do fim da ditadura militar o projeto de militarização das escolas tem ficado cada vez mais forte e além disso ajudado a destruir a educação pública. Como futura professora esse cenário é extremamente assustador pois estamos vendo as escolas se tornarem cada vez mais fábricas de trabalhadores com ideologias que favorecem apenas as elites ao invés de um lugar de aprendizado e emancipação

During the past classes we talked about schools in the XXI century. When thinking about that, the first thing that comes to mind is using technology in classes but one of the main points of the discussion was that we don't need to have digital or technological resources in the classroom to have a modern school, but we need to be able to use and teach about those resources and the digital world, because nowadays they are present in almost every aspect of our lives. Speaking as a teacher I usually prefer to do activities without technology, especially because I'm not really good with it, but I understand the need of learning and teaching about this kind of thing.

Besides technology the schools in the XXI century are a lot more interested in attending to the students needs and being inclusive. Even though we know we still have a lot to work on it's great to know that some things are changing.

In the last classes, while reading about the PPP, we talked about how a school must try to help to fix some problems in society like inequality. And I paid a special attention to the word "try" because as teachers we constantly put way to much weight on our backs, we want our students to learn, to pass the tests,to help them with personal issues, to help them make friends, but a lot of it isn't our job. So we can try, but we won't fix society. Also, it was really interesting noticing while reading the texts how all off our relationship are political even at school. We often hear parents saying they want their kids to learn without getting involved in politics but everything we teach and all of our relationships are surrounded with politics, nothing is neutral
