First grade was when I really started to fall in love with books. I would read all the time no matter if we were in the car, in the grocery store, out to lunch, at my Grandma's, and even sometimes during the summer, I would try to read books on a raft in my Grandma's pool. That idea never really turned out so well. We started reading chapter books with plots that really drew me in, and I was at the age where I loved the challenge of them.

The one on the far left was actually my roommate here at Mizzou my freshman year, but that's me second from the right. I'm not sure why I remember this but my Grandma Paluczak gave me a set of Nancy Drew books, a Bible, and my own Saints book with a bunch of names and stories of saints in honor of the sacrament I had just received. I thought this was like the coolest gift ever, but all my friends did not agree!

At my grade school, every year the 6th graders participated in a Reading Auction. Each page you read outside of the classroom counted for a point, and your parents and teachers had to sign off to verify what you read. I had a bit of a competitive edge and read over 21,000 pages that school year and won the Auction. I ended up winning an Adidas sweatsuit outfit, Cardinals tickets, and a bunch of other random stuff. It was one of my proudest moments!

This past summer, after hearing about the sale of Hugh Hefner's mansion, I became really intrigued by the Playboy empire and how it has taken a pretty big fall since my generation's childhood. I checked out Holly Madison's book Down the Rabbit Hole from the library to learn more. I read it on the way to our family vacation in Gulf Shores, AL and I couldn't believe half of the stuff Playboy got away with. They basically owned all rights to the girls that worked for the brand, and they had 9 p.m. curfews every night and were only allowed to leave the mansion with permission. They also weren't allowed to go home to see their family for longer than 1 day. It was almost like a scary trap.

It is my favorite week out of the year, and we've stayed in the same 2 condos at the same complex since I can remember. The condos each have a guest book where families can write messages to the condo owners, but my family never wrote anything. I took it into my own hands in July of 2004 to write a message from myself, including the fact that the sun made me "look like I was in a toaster." I found the book last summer and was paging through and came across the two pages from our trip that year. It was a really awesome moment getting to read what I wrote at such a young age about a place I love to visit still to this day.

I have family in Poland, so I was always super interested in the Holocaust. In middle school, I would check out a ton of books and biographies about victims of the Holocaust. I read The Diary of Anne Frank and I can honestly say it was one of the most intriguing books I had ever read. I could never imagine the things her family went through, but I am glad her dad went through the trouble of having her diary published for little girls like my middle school self to learn about this dark time in our world's history.

I always loved checking out the Magic Tree House books from the library, but this one was by far my favorite. I always had a fascination with the Titanic for some odd reason...so odd that I literally asked for the Titanic movie on the double VHS tape set for Christmas in 3rd grade. I still have them! I loved history and reading fictional stories about nonfiction events, and I think that's why I loved this book series so much!
