In my opinion, a good story is one that has good detail. One that explains the surroundings to make you really be able to 'feel' the world the author made in your mind. 
The author also adds unique characters to make a reader interested into the book. I also think that it is interesting when the author explains something, with out just telling you what it is. I think that makes you really try and understand what is being said before you are told.
