My formative assessment painting was based on these primary images I have taken of the lake district.

I Painted from a photo that I took of Ullswater on nice sunny day. Therefore the greens, blues and whites were quite bright. I then used my own creative ideas and past projects ideas in years 1 and 2 to have sticks, butterflies, flowers and animals such as Rabbits and Birds.

Stated before I have been inspired from young due to my grandparents love for hiking. My recent projects have been based off my nans house, being full of different animals ornaments, floral patterns, animal patterns, flowers everywhere and a beautiful garden. I create a lot of art work at her home or even in her garden to put my mind into focus.

2. Organize examples effectively

The way you arrange the different pieces in your portfolio reflects on your presentation skills and thought process. If you are conscientious about the order in which your work is presented, admissions counselors will be able to better understand your work’s narrative and focus on your skill set.

3. Write clear, concise labels

A title, date, and description of the medium are standard.

4. Be ready to discuss each piece

Whether it's during an interview, a portfolio presentation, or even in an email, you may have to answer questions or explain parts of your work. You don't need to memorize the details of each selection, but it won't hurt to revisit the works and remember their creation process. This is especially important if you're including works from years ago.

5. Tell stories

Showcasing your technical ability is important, but you should also include works in your portfolio that show your storytelling skills. Think about the deeper meaning of each example. If you can tie this meaning to a specific experience or unique attribute that sets you apart from other applicants, even better.

6. Don’t get hung up on quantity

As long as you generally meet the minimum requirements mentioned in the application, you shouldn't be overly concerned about how many works are in your portfolio. More pieces could help, but not at the expense of your standards of quality.

7. Get outside advice

Creating an art portfolio makes you think a lot about your own work. It's easy to get boxed in by your perception and let it cloud your judgment. Seeking advice and opinions on your work from a trusted advisor will broaden your perspective and help you see your portfolio in a new light.

8. Showcase your technical ability

Technical skills are what allow an artist to communicate the message or meaning of a piece. They also give admissions counselors a sense of your potential.

9. Don't choose cliché examples

Your portfolio should include pieces that art schools won't see from every other applicant. One type of work that can be seen in portfolios often is portraits of still life – while pictures of fruit or flowers can show technical ability, they’re unlikely to tell a story or have a “concept.” You should include them, just include some other examples along with them.

10. Show how you'd like to develop

It's not required, but if there are areas you'd like to direct your future art career towards – animation or graphic design, for example – include these kinds of pieces in your portfolio. If acceptable, explain these focus areas and why you chose them.

Your portfolio shows that you are a creative, well-rounded, technically capable artist. If you take your time, edit carefully, and seek outside help, you can compile a wonderful portfolio that shows off your abilities.

Bristol based Mariele Neudecker (1965) is a German born artist whose work utilises a broad range of materials and techniques covering photography, sculpture and includes installations. In an interview Neudecker states she often works with scale which can be quite miniature.  She uses these various media to create heightened landscapes in three dimensional forms shifting them into a different reality. She says, “my work is hovering between fiction and reality.” (MAD, Artist Mariele Neudecker 2011)

Mariele Neudeckers art piece ‘and the world changed colour: turning yellow’ explores the fascination of the sublime. She does this by manipulating the colour yellow with glass and light. Neudecker uses her imagination that melds with reality to transport the viewer's perception of a nature scene. The artists states in an interview that her work focuses on the “perception of how we look at things and how we perceive them.” (MAD, Artist Mariele Neudecker 2011)  

On the description of her work Neudecker takes inspiration from the dense birch trees of Norway’s forests to create a three-dimensional living landscape submerged underwater. (website, Mariele Neudecker - Artist 2021) (This piece has also been inspired by landscape artist Sohlberg. Neudecker was quickly drawn to the use of strong colour in Sohlbergs  large, beautiful landscapes. Neudecker likes that in Sohlbergs work there is an “absence of human being figures.” (YouTube, 2019 Dulwich picture gallery). The artist looks at a “landscape like a cultural human space, not an untouched bit of nature,” everything humans do they variably change the environment to suit their purpose. 

Neudecker uses the power of colour, creating a sublime experience for viewers. The work is a glass square tank placed in the middle of a room covered entirely in yellow wallpaper. Visitors are surrounded and overwhelmed with the colour yellow. The colour can be associated with happiness, energy, and positivity. The yellow light shining on to the glass to me seems like sunlight. This radiates a sense of warmth into the piece. Neudecker states “using yellow everywhere, people mentally inhabit the space into the tank, drawn into the water or air or the yellow inside there” (YouTube, 2019 Dulwich picture gallery) therefore you are in yellow either way. This overwhelming use of yellow can cause a range of emotions, as example unease and wonder.  

Neudecker has made a simple room covered in yellow to be transformed or changed into something extraordinary, a contrast between the familiar and unfamiliar. The artists mention that ‘someone one has been in the space; somebody has seen it before you’ (YouTube, 2019 Dulwich picture gallery). Your experience is not unique, not new, and not original, that forest already been visited, but do people think and see it the same way as you? With viewers questioning their perception of reality, Neudecker is challenging the boundaries of the sublime.

This Exhibition of a selected sample of Neudeckers works is the subject of the event and how landscape can be representative and turned into our own subjective interpretation of them. 

Stated in the description of the exhibition ‘Neudecker's interest in landscape and nature, has been influenced namely by the artistic, philosophical, historical and the political dimension of the romantic and contemporary sublime, as represented by Northern European painting of the 19^th century.’ (website, Mariele Neudecker - Artist 2021) (Website) The sublime as a concept has been a relevance in art for centuries, especially during the romantic period. Artist often represents the sublime by creating breathtaking landscapes or elements of the natural world or religious iconic images. 

Echo chamber represents Neudecker's view of several types of simulations and simulacra. Neudecker's use of technology, such as light and sound, adds another layer of simulation to her installations. Neudecker recreates a sunset using artificial light, highlighting the manipulation of natural phenomena by human intervention. This is similar Baudrillard's statement that our experiences are mediated, and our understanding of reality is constructed through simulations. Sunset can happen very quickly and thus when Neudecker is talking about the sunset, it is like French photographer Henri Cartier- Bresson ‘capturing the decisive moment.’  The collected works demonstrate Neudecker’s long-term commitment to the interpretation of simulation and simulacra and herself development within Post Modernism. The selection of works over this extended timescale demonstrate clearly Neudecker’s commitment to presenting her expressions of nature in a style that captures the inherent contradictions when attempting to capture a natural scene, when is the best time  to capture it?, in the heavy snow, early morning , evening time during a heavy storm, all have their place within the canon of landscape painting and the choices are clearly those of the artist at that time. Neudecker challenges the viewers to see the reproductions in a new way even though many viewers have already examined the works and made their conclusions the works are still there to be re-examined and see if different conclusions can be reached.  

Since the originals were photographed or videoed, it is then re-translated to the result, this is an example of simulacra.

Aesthetics- design and advertising both physical and social media - as well as beauty therapy.

In the last few months me and my mother have been transforming our conservatory into a home clinic, starting off our own business in aesthetics. Over the last decade there has been a huge boost in the beauty industry, aesthetics being one of the new types. After my studies at university I am going to attend courses in aesthetics and beauty. This includes skin care, microblading, lip blush, laser treatments etc. As we have only just started the business, I know this can not be a full time job straight away and it takes time to build cliental. 

I wanted to gain work experience in the beauty industry to help build my own business. Looking at local business online I found 'Masterpieceaesthetics' owned by Nurse Zoe. She has enabled me to come to her clinic in Garrets Green, Birmingham. I was able to meet zoe and she showed me the ins and out to her business. She told me that it has taken her nearly three years for her to build her cliental. she still works part time as a district nurse.

I was shown different aesthetic procedures and products such as, needles, filler.

I met different clients and its interesting learning about face anatomy and how different people are. You have to be very careful and cautious. Different filler is better for different people. As an example someone who has naturally small lips should have a natural dissolving filler that can be dissolved by the person themselves. This requires to have multiple hot showers through out time massaging the area. Injecting small areas requires multiple treatments overtime. Each treatment should have at least 4-6 weeks healing time before any more is inserted. As an example 1st treatment 0.5ml second treatment 1ml. It takes about 3-5ml to notice changes. A top up is needed every 6 months. Over filling an area can cause migration. another example is instead of the filler on a lip to be on the lip line it migrates right under the nose or possible into the cheeks!

This work experience is not only about beauty but design, making kits, controlling Instagram, reposting, sharing posts tagging and hashtags promoting and doing deals e.g bring a friend half price. Booking appointments and taking calls.

when in a clinic you are using needles, meaning skin is being broken and most likely there will be blood.

Cleaning major needles to be disposed off and wipes containing blood. Everything needs to be disinfected and mopped, bed, pillows and bed washed and wiped down, Everything steamed including windows. Numbing tools stress balls, wooden floors, cupboards.

I have included some posts I have made and some photos I have taken of clients. I use a ring light attached to my phone to give a perfect view of the face. It also makes the photo look nicer and more appealing to the audience. If the photo looks bad and unprofessional it might stop your chance of building clientele.

When designing the posts I have to use themes, colours she uses to present her business. Each photo has a watermark of her logo so other people cant steal her work.

Reposting your reviews your clients leave and posting photos after the filler has healed, is important as if you have good reviews people will trust you more. Making sure business cards are packed in the aftercare bags are good to have. Business cards can be quite cheap to buy as they come in packs.

The Kodak Aerochrome is an infrared-sensitive photographic film that paints in pink every nuance of green, originally used during the Second World War to locate the mimetic tracks of hidden soldiers.

The Irish artist Richard Mosse uses this particular film to tell the civil war that for years involved the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the aim to reinterprets the typical language of the war reportage.

This indicates that Hutchinson is surrounded by the beautiful joys of nature. Living in the country side compared to the city is majorly different. Living in a city can be dull and repetitive. When I see amazing landscapes it has more effect on me as I'm not used to seeing these scenes in my everyday life, I can only imagine basing it off of videos, photos, memories.

Living in a city I am not surrounded by big hills, mountains, farms and animals. For me exploring different routes and places to hike gives me a sense of freedom. In the past I have done quite a few growing up with my nan and grandad. This includes the national parks in both England and wales and some hikes in different countries e.g Spain, France, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. After my studies I would like to continue to travel and look at how beautiful the world is in different countries.

Something I want to do as an artist is paint in real life. I have always painted from a picture, I feel like painting from a picture to real life will have quite a few differences.

On this day it was a quite cloudy and cold so the photos are a little grey.

For my professional studies I wanted to develop my research by testing my teaching skills in art. This will help support my research into teaching. I thought it would be best with starting with a young family member. I did a tutoring lesson with my cousin Evie aged 10. After speaking to her, she was most confident with pencil drawing and was not confident in paining describing herself as a 'rubbish painter'. So to build up her confidence I taught her how to paint with acrylic. I taught her the basics of colour theory and how to mix colours to make browns, greys. We went through different paints such as water colour, oil and acrylic. I gave Evie the choice to paint on canvas or a sliced piece of wood. After choosing the wood I showed her my process and techniques for landscapes. I wanted to start with landscapes as that is my best area in art. I find landscapes easier than portraits and will help to improve painting skills.

We first painted a white layer of paint on the wood as it absorbs the water based paint quicker. We made a plan on what we are going to paint. We used two secondary images and Evie used her imagination to make her painting unique. Using the colour wheel helped Evie mix primary colours and complementary.

I helped her paint an outline of the landscape to get an idea of size and focus points. This helps map the composition of the painting to make sure the view looks correct. as an example the land, hills, trees. The closer up the more detailed and bigger, the further away is smaller and less detailed.

I then showed Evie how to paint water. This is one of the most difficult things to paint. With acrylic because it is water based so you can make it really thin. I then build it up by using lighter colours. Starting off using dark colours allows you to mark out the dark tones. As you develop you can work with the highlights working with the sunlight. You have to ask yourself is it sunrise, midday, sunset, night? especially if you are making up your own landscape. I showed Evie how to make a dark blue and wanted her to make a dark turquoise colour. The reflection of the water with the blue sky and the green surrounded it can make the water look a little turquoise. As she was painting the layers I showed her how to make lighter versions of the darker colour. Different sized and shaped brushes create different painting strokes.

Throughout the development of the painting I gave an example of how I would paint, bushes, trees, grass, mountains, clouds. Evie then copied me and made an fantastic landscape. Other techniques like impasto was used using pallet knives for the snow on the mountain.

Finally we finished off the landscape with a beautiful swan and some varnish to make it bright and glossy.

This experience was brilliant as it has influenced me to join an kids arts club or possibly go into teaching. Evie's Mother stated that "she had the most amazing day and is so much more confident in painting, and that she has taken so much information and inspiration from the tutoring session. She wont stop painting now."

Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known in his time as William Turner, [a] was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colouring, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings.

J.M.W. Turner was a master of capturing the sublime in his artwork. His paintings often depicted powerful natural scenes that evoked awe and wonder. Turner's use of colour and light in his seascapes and landscapes created a sense of the sublime, where nature's grandeur and beauty were central. His ability to convey the overwhelming power and beauty of nature in his paintings truly captures the essence of the sublime.

Turner's work continues to inspire and amaze art lovers around the world, showcasing his deep connection to the natural world.

The Lake, Petworth, Sunset;

Some thirty years after his watercolours of Harewood House. Turner's views of Petworth show much greater artistic freedom. This is especially true of his painting of the lake, which concentrates on light and colour, reflections and atmosphere, rather than recognisable topographical detail. Turner was a frequent visitor to Petworth and felt very much at home there.

Petworth, Like Compton Verney, was landscaped by Capability Brown. Turner's painting shows how these actual landscapes stimulated imagination and innovation when they were reproduced in art.

During the Landscape and imagination exhibition at Compton Verney Turners Piece stud out to me as it was painted so differently to other landscapes. His style is quite unique and soft. The light colours the yellow, browns and oranges blend well with the greens and blues of the trees, grass and sky. You could describe the painting as blurry but you can still see it is a landscape.

This painting I find to be more realistic compared to 'The Lake, Petworth, Sunset;Sample Study'. The details in the water fountain and cliff are fabulous and clear. This piece seems to be duller due to the grey tones in the work.The trees etc in the fore ground have more colour compared to the building on the cliff in the background. This could suggest where this scene is based is quite winding, foggy and cloudy.

Collins was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite group of artists and believed in painting everything from nature in minature detail.

The Nun is examining a passion flower, but the painting is dominated by varieties of lilies, the flower sacred to the Virgin Mary. The white lilies are often known as Madonna lilies. she is in an enclosed garden, like those shown in earlier images of the Virgin Mary. These spectacular blooms are not native to Britain; they were imported from distant regions of the world, including the Balkans, Africa and North America

The Garden was the suburban one of Thomas Combe, Superintendent of Oxford University Press. The words on the frame, designed by Collin's friend John Everett Millais, come from the biblical song 'Solomom'.- Compton Verney.

Collins was a friend of the Pre-Raphaelites and imitated the bright colour and detail of their pictures. The critic John Ruskin admired 'the careful painting in this little study'. The sheaf of corn symbolises bread. The ivy may allude to the wine used in Holy Communion, as it was sacred to Bacchus, the Greek god of wine.

The 1850s saw a number of bountiful harvests in Britain, following a series of disastrous harvests in the 'hungry forties'. This painting celebrates the magnificent harvest of 1854. Collins adds an extra dimension by painting the child holding a bound sheaf of wheat, both the traditional symbol of concord and the attribute of Ceres, classical goddess of agriculture and abundance. The ivy on the wall is the symbol of Bacchus, god of wine, so the artist may be referring to the Eucharist, the Christian sacrament of consuming bread and wine. Collins was one of the earliest friends of the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly Hunt and Millais, fellow-students in the 1840s at the Royal Academy. He was even proposed for membership of the Brotherhood itself. This picture was painted mainly in the summer of 1854 before he went to Scotland with Millais.

Collins work is focused on using nature as religious symbols. I found through researching his work that the people in his paintings are quite miserable. The Lights and details in his work are super realistic. he captures the sun light perfectly with all the different tones in the sink, clothes, plants and bushes. Knowing that the media is Oil this would of taken a long amount of time to complete, but this explains the smoothness and realistic effect to his painting. I find it easier to blend colours in oil and give a nice texture when painting on canvas. As an example acrylic can be too 'plastic' and hard.

Capturing the sunsets of the peak district. This inspired me to visit the ‘peak district’ myself. This shows the different colours of reds, purples, oranges, and pinks from a sunset, making the sky, trees, and water different colours to their original colours.

THE BEGINNING

I got into photography quite late to be honest, not until I was in my mid twenties. I've always had a passion and interest in wildlife and watching David Attenborough's documentaries gave me inspiration that I wanted to capture animals in their environment.  The start of my photography journey was by getting married.

At the end of each course you get a citificate that you have to display in your clinic. A course can take from 1 week to 1+ month.

I have gone for a pink/gold/floral theme as it matches our colours to our clinic.

I have experimented with different ways to make advertisement. Through animation on procreate. Using apps like adobe, photoshop, canva etc.

Junior Graphic Designer Job Duties:

• You’ll take a brief, and then design and deliver promotional banners and product units for the website.

Fine Artist

Fine Artists usually specialise in a particular medium to create original pieces.  Disciplines include painting, sculpture and drawing and mediums can vary from paper to metal and far beyond.  Artists may work independently or on a commission basis.

Concept Artist

Concept artists create sketches of characters or environments for use in computer games, films, videos etc. They work to project/client briefs.

 Curator

A Curator manages collections of art work and/or historical artefacts. They are often involved with the acquisition and care of items. Curator roles can be varied, often involving marketing, events management, public relations and fundraising.

Graphic Designer

Graphic designers create images and lettering for use across various digital and print media from websites to magazines. This role combines technical skill and creativity as well as the ability to communicate clearly to work with clients.

Illustrator

Illustrators use their creative skills to bring visual elements to a story. They may specialise in a particular medium such as digital illustration or drawing.

Printmaker

Printmakers are involved with transferring images to a variety of surfaces using moulds and a variety of different techniques. Techniques vary from traditional craft-based methods to more modern computer-generated design.

Set Designer

Set Designers work in film, television and/or theatre creating the set in collaboration with other members of a production crew. Clear communication and creativity are essential for this role.

Teacher

There are opportunities to teach art in secondary schools, further education colleges and also primary schools.

As well as teaching through lectures and seminars, academic staff in higher education also carry out research and a wide range of administrative and pastoral tasks. Although a teaching qualification is not required, you will need a higher degree, normally a PhD. Competition is strong for entry-level academic posts.

Art Therapist

Art therapists help people who may struggle to communicate verbally to express their feelings through visual art methods. Practitioners work with a wide variety of patients experiencing a variety of difficulties.

Visual Merchandiser

Visual Merchandisers work to promote images, products, services and brands through visual concepts and strategies.

Community Arts Worker

Community arts worker is more of an umbrella term as job titles tend to relate quite closely to the role or type of work, for example arts development officer, youth engagement officer, youth arts practitioner, and community projects assistant.
