The tone of the poem is despairing. Whitman shows this tone throughout the poem with phrases like "I emerge so early sleepless" This is despairing because from the context we know that he is a nurse in the camp and he has to get up so early to take care of the probably thousands in the camp that are all dying. He is losing hope in his capability to take care of all these soldiers that keep coming in from battle. Another example of this is "Over each the blanket spread, ample brownish woolen blanket, Gray and heavy blanket, folding, covering all." This text from the poem shows that he, the nurse, is staring blankly at all the covered up bodies that he couldn't save, setting the tone of despairing and losing hope of being able to improve this difficult and unfortunate situation. Overall, Whitman expresses this tone through his experience as a nurse during the war, losing hope in his ability to keep these fighting soldiers alive through many battles.

A symbol in this poem is God. This is because as the nurse is uncovering the bodies, he finds many people and states he finds the body of Christ. This can be shown from the text stating, "Young man I think I know you- I think this face is the face of the Christ himself" This is showing how he sees Christ in the dead bodies because like Christ, the sacrificed themselves for the human race, giving up their lives for others, and suffered many pains so other people didn't have to. Whitman truly shows how God or Christ is a symbol during the war, giving the feeling of loss and sympathy towards the soldiers who gave themselves up for the human race.
