Over the years, the Paralympic Games have expanded considerably. According to the Paralympics Reporter website, the 2012 Paralympics in London had 4,302 participants from 164 countries. A wide variety of athletes now participates, including people with cerebral palsy, amputations, visual impairments, and other disabilities. Along the way, the games have become much more competitive. In the first years of the Paralympics, organizers and athletes focused on the health benefits of exercise. Now the competitors are considered elite athletes in their own right (Jones 112).

With all that growth, the Paralympics have had to become more organized and structured. One challenge has been finding a way to ensure fairness among competitors. “Two people with cerebral palsy, for example, might have very different levels of mental and physical function,” explains Raequan Jones (114). He is a journalist who has reported on the Paralympic Games for almost 20 years. “To even the playing field, so to speak, each sport has developed its own special classification system” (Jones 115)

Many Paralympic sports are almost exactly the same as their Olympic counterparts. Judo and shooting, for instance, are very similar to the versions of those sports that able-bodied athletes play (Brown and Hearst 22). Other sports have been specially adapted to suit people with disabilities. For example, blind cyclists ride tandem bikes with a partner who can see, and volleyball is played sitting down. A few Paralympic sports were created exclusively for people with disabilities. Goalball, for instance, is a team sport that was invented for blind people in 1946. During matches the crowd must watch in silence so the players can hear the ball (Jones 122-26).

Advancements in technology have helped Paralympic athletes take the competition to the next level. Prosthetic limbs used to be made with heavy materials like wood and steel. Now prosthetics, wheelchairs, and other pieces of equipment are made from light materials that have been optimized for speed and agility (Paralympics Reporter).
