I love the narrative style of this original and unusual book, which is narrated by the omniscient and empathetic character of death, and features metafiction, vignettes and a plethora of beautiful imagery among other interesting features. It is a lengthy but accessible read, with a wide cast of characters to whom you will become very attached...at your peril! On the surface this is a book about a young girl and the people who live on her street during WW2 in Dresden. At its heart, it is a love letter to words and language, and words become a powerful character in their own right as the novel develops.

Soon, everything about their way of life changes and they find themselves increasingly cut off from the rest of the world. Eilish soons comes face to face with decisions she never thought she would. Some parts had me SOBBING. A reminder that what we see on the news could happen anywhere. A real eye opener.

Touching The Void is a non fiction book published in 1986 which won the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountaineering literature and the NCR award for non fiction in the same year. It is not a literary book , there isn’t much figurative language and you will look in vain for individual quotations or arresting metaphors. It is a memoir of a mountaineering expedition in Peru in 1985.

Joe Simpson went on to write several other memoirs of his climbing and a couple of novels which are always hauntingly melancholic and reflective. Touching the Void was eventually made into a film which won a BAFTA with dramatized reconstructions of the climbing and escape interspersed with first person interviews with Joe and Simon…it is impossible to watch the film without recognising the trauma which both men experienced.
