Date:9/8/2021-15/8/2021(week 2)
How is your progress?
In week 2, I proceed with learning 3 new topics of Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia through Open Learning. The first topic is number in which I learned how to sign for number from 0-10. I find it very useful to express my age and my date of birth. Other than that, there was a video showed how they use sign language to sign for car registration number. I attempted quizzes and thankfully I manages to get all correct with few attempts. Other than that, I managed to learn basic greetings such as “hello”, “good morning” and “how are you?”. I found that the gestures were not that hard and I liked how we need to express suitable emotions together with the gestures. I practice signing with my sisters so that I build muscle memory.

Points to remember from week 2!
It’s helpful for me to speak verbally together with the sign language so that I can memorize the signs better. I need to remember that everytime I do sign language, I need to express suitable facial expressions.

Your feelings & thoughts
I found that there’s simple sign for each words. For example, the word “good morning” we don’t need to spell the the words letter by letter.

1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I am thankful that my sister shares the same interest with me. She joins me whenever I learn sign language. It is some sort of spending quality time with her.

Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
The videos for the quizzes didn’t have subtitles. I need to replay the videos for several times in order to understand the conversations better

2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Passion

Determination

Your plan for next week (Week 3)
Look forward to learn the next topics and practice more and more

Together with this post, I include a video of mine signing my date of birth.

One of it was a classic crunchy top brownie and the other one was a softer, denser brownie. I experimented with the second brownie to make it fit my preference and I thoroughly enjoyed making alterations as it helped me understand the significance of each ingredient in the already given recipe.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Brownies are not the same as cakes. Brownies require minimal skills as it doesn’t require fancy equipments and has a fixed list of ingredients. Brownies are also easy to improve to our taste. We can add caramel, nuts or even chocolate chunks to make it chewy if that’s what we prefer.

After going through various recipes, I understood that dense brownies require more liquid ingredients like evaporated milk meanwhile crispier brownies rely on dry ingredients especially sugar. I also learnt that brownies aren’t supposed to mixed thoroughly using a beater as incorporating air will make it fluffy and cake-like.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I feel ecstatic because I experimented with a recipe and yielded a successful final product.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Following the instructions completely the first time before making any alterations to avoid any confusion.

6. Any difficulties/concerns?

LANGUAGE BEYOND WORDS
Date: 02/08/2021 – 08/08/2021

HOW IS YOUR PROGRESS?

In week 2, I have continued learning 4 new Malaysian Sign Language (MSL) topics with BIM Asas 1 Course via Open Learning MOOC. The first topic is family in which I learned of the signs for family members such as father, mother, elder and younger siblings, grandparents as well as uncle and aunty. Therefore, I am now able to do a simple introduction of my family. The next topic is the states in Malaysia and their capital. This topic was harder and much more challenging than I thought because each state and capital has its own specific sign. However, with more practice I was finally able to get the hang of it. With this, I am now able to sign my birthplace and my current place of stay.

Besides that, I mastered the signs for the colours such as red, orange, yellow, green and others. I find it interesting that the sign for colours like yellow, green, blue and purple uses the first letter in their spelling which makes it a lot more easier to memorize them. For example, the sign for yellow (kuning) is “k” whereas for purple (ungu) is “u”. The last topic which I learned in this week is feelings such as like, dislike, fear, anger and others. Now, I can express my feelings with the signs which I have learned! By the end of the week, I did some revision using Buku Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia and also conducted weekly review with my friend via zoom.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 2!
I have to remember how to sign topics related to family, states in Malaysia and their capitals, colours as well as feelings. Other than that, I also have to remember the questioning words (6W1H) such as what, who, when, where, why, which and how. This is because the videos for the quizzes in Open Learning MOOC no longer have subtitles. Therefore, in order to understand and answer the quizzes, I will have to grasp the basic questioning words.

MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS
Throughout this week, I feel happy because I am learning new things and also achieving small goals as I finished off each topic day by day. Though I still find it confusing and nerve-wrecking sometimes, especially in the topic about the states in Malaysia and their capital. Nevertheless, I am proud of myself as I could understand sign language bit by bit. I am intrigued to learn more! 😊

1 GOOD THING FROM WHAT I DID THAT I CAN PRACTICE NOW!
I can now sign my birthplace and do a simple introduction of my family.

DIFFICULTIES/ CONCERNS & HOW DID I COPE
At first, I find it hard to complete the quizzes in Open Learning MOOC because the videos no longer have subtitles but after learning the basic questioning words (6W1H), I was slowly able to understand and answer the questions. Though I am slow and I have to repeat the videos countless times but I am definitely making progress. To improve myself, I will continue to revise as practice makes perfect!

2 WORDS TO DESCRIBE ELECTIVE POSTING PROGRESS SO FAR
Fulfilling and intriguing :)

MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK (WEEK 3)
My plans for week 3 is to learn how to sign topics related to jobs and occupation, nature and weather, time and date as well as signs for religion, culture and festivals celebrated in Malaysia.

Date of week 2 : 26/07/2021
Date reported : 12/08/2021

HOW IS YOUR PROGRESS?
For week 2, I have focused more on pastry recipes and making. There are various recipes I have learned such as cream puff, peach strudels and Nutella-filiing croissant. So far, I have chosen cream puff because of its simplicity yet delicious outcome. I have tried making cream cheese filling other than fresh cream. However, the sweet taste has not come to judges' liking. The comments I have received from them are :
- For the puff, it has soft consistency which makes it tastier than having crispy texture like choux. However, the pastry did not rise as much as they expected.
- For the fresh cream filling, it has refreshing taste and not too sweet. They prefer the fresh cream filling.
- For the cream cheese filling, judges mentioned that it is too sweet and does not really blend in well with the puff.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 2!
Based on what I have learned in week 2 is that to only use wheat flour while making cream puff. This is because flour provides the structure for the cream puff. The gluten/protein in flour combines to form a stretchy web that traps air bubbles. In cream puffs, we want lots of protein so never use cake flour, pastry flour or other low-protein flours such as self-rising flour.

In week 1, I have mentioned to find out the correct way on how to heat biscuits either by using heat upside down, only from the top or below. Hence, I have made some reading and asked my coordinator about this matter. So far what I have gotten is that for baking biscuits always use heat from the bottom. This is because direct heat (heat from top) will toast or crisp things in the oven. You don't want to toast a biscuit making it looks like you have burned your biscuits.

Some tips on baking cookies are:
-Usual time for baking biscuits are usually 20-25 minutes in 180C.
-When reached 20-25 minutes, take out a biscuit and look at the colour at its bottom. If it is already golden colour then you are good to go. If you like bittery taste, then bake for another 10 minutes until the bottom is golden-brownish in colour.
-To avoid biscuits from sticking on the pan, use parchment paper.
-Biscuits that are already done have to be let cool down in room temperature before keeping them in containers.
-Biscuits usually have life-span of 3 months without any preservatives.

MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS
I kinda enjoyed making the cream puffs as it has been my very first attempt. The outcome is also better than I expected even though if compared to standard outcomes, I have more improvements needed to be done. The cream cheese filling honestly disappoints me as I thought it would taste better than fresh cream. I actually felt nervous when the judges tasted my cream puffs as I know they actually have tasted a lot more better cream puffs before. But I really appreciate their comments.

1 GOOD THING FROM WHAT I DID THAT I CAN PRACTICE NOW!
1 good thing I have gained is that day by day from watching videos and studying recipes, I have learned more about when to use certain types of flour & when to avoid certain types of flour. In week 1, I learned there are a lot types of flour. In week 2, I learned again that in pastry making, for better consistency it is better to avoid using certain types of flour. And what more interesting is that, I actually know the science and facts behind it. :D

ANY DIFFICULTIES/CONCERNS? HOW DID I COPE?
My concern is that I have yet to find on another recipes on how to make cream cheese filling less sweet and instead rich in the cheesy creamy filling. I have searched some recipes for the filling, however they turned out to be the same. I will have to do few experiments to make it less sweet and acceptable.

2 WORDS TO DESCRIBE EP PROGRESS SO FAR.
EXHILIRATING & THRILLING.

MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK (WEEK 3)
My plan is to explore more on bread making and try making glazed doughnuts.

1. Your name, matric number, date

DURKAYINY SANKAR

A167906

Week 2: 26th July - 1st august

2. How is your progress?

As of week 2 , i made chocolate chip cookies. I’ve searched far and wide for the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe. Finally, I found one on sally’s baking addiction website. I’ve never made cookies before and this was my first attempt. The cookies came out pretty good . I’m not really much of a cookie eater but these may have just changed my mind. They taste even better the next day and My family loves them. After this , i think this will be my go to chocolate chip cookie recipe.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Always preheat the oven before starting the process because it makes life so much easier. Use cornstarch in dry ingredients, trust me on this ; cornstarch;a thickening ingredient is the secret weapon in this cookie recipe. 2 teaspoons give the cookies extra lift and leave them extra soft.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

To be honest , i feel happy and quite motivated as the outcome of my baking was incredible. I find myself enjoying this whole process. Baking was really therapeutic for me. Following a recipe with clear cut directions and proven results gives you a sense of power and allows you to feel like you are the captain of a ship sailing on smooth waters. You can craft something beautiful, delicious, comforting and perfect. I am thrilled to try my next recipe on week 3.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Patience Patience Patience

Im telling this because i spent around 4 hours on baking this chocolate chip cookies . If you rush through the process the outcome might not be satisfying. So , i need to stay calm and composed whilst baking.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I find it difficult to adjust the oven temperature and the baking time. This is because the first batch of my cookies was a bit burnt . When I put the next batch , i reduced the temperature from 175 to 160 and i also reduced the time from 10 minutes to 7 minutes. And it came out perfectly so I adhered to the same temperature and cooking time for the following batches.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Therapeutic

Enjoyable

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

So enough with the cookies , next week I’m gonna work on a delicious loaf cake.

Well, it may seems easy but after watching video and gaining tips from the online baking course called The Art of Baking with Yuppiechef from Udemy, I had a confident that I can do it. We need to do 2 separate mixture of cakes in order to form marble cake. The process of making the cake mixture is the same except in one of the mixture, cocoa powder is added.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 2!

Preheat the oven 10 minutes before the baking process.

“Ku Bersuara Tanpa Suara”

Date: 09/08/2021 – 13/08/2021

HOW IS YOUR PROGRESS?

So for week 2 I proceed with the next topic with BIM Asas 1 Course via Open Learning platform for this sign language project “Ku bersuara tanpa suara” . What I have learned in this weeks in were the sign for family. From here I have successfully memorise the sign which represent every member of my primary family. I have also came out with a video to introduce my family only using sign language. It was such a brag but I am proud it.

Besides, I just completed the topic of “places” where here I was taught to interact using sign language to tell about places such as my hometown, where am I settling now and also my birthplace. At first I thought I would have just spell the name of my hometown but I was wrong. There are specific sign to signify specific places. The other free time I used it to practice every topic I have learnt and practice my finger movement. I also watched youtube more and to improve my skills.

in both topics I was tested with some quizzes. Alhamdulliah I aced it.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 2!

Although it is just 2 topic but the content is quite a lot and took practices to master. Imagine try to say “ I am moving from Kuala Lumpur to Georgetown” using sign language.

MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS

I feel glad that I have progressed but these topics are quite hard. I am starting to feel the heat. I took back I have said in week 1. Sign language is difficult but not impossible. So I have to keep going strong. Each language is unique. Just like mathematics. Hard but do-able.

1 GOOD THING FROM WHAT I DID THAT I CAN PRACTICE NOW!

Patience. My patience develops to some extend when I am practicing these sign. It is hard.

DIFFICULTIES/ CONCERNS & HOW DID I COPE

The task is difficult as the example given does not fit to my video content. So to fill in those knowledge gap I put on some extra work by watching videos in youtube. However the next problem arises as I noticed there are some variation in malay sign language and some of it are totally alien from me. So I double-checked every video I see with another video to make sure I am still “talkimg” the same language,

2 WORDS TO DESCRIBE ELECTIVE POSTING PROGRESS SO FAR

Progressive steadily

MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK (WEEK 3)

My plans for week 3 is to finish the topic regarding of occupation, weather, schedule and festivals. I see a lot of work to be put in. Hopefully I will manage.

Date 14/8/2021
2) What have I done?
In week 2, I proceed to learn 5 new topics, which includes colour, day, time, family, animals, food and beverages. As for the topic colour, day, time and family, I learn them through Openlearning while the remaining ones via BIM pocketbook and Eddy app. I use different learning media because it is more interesting and I can cover a wide range of topics.

In week 1, I can only sign things alphabet by alphabet. In week 2, I learn the specific sign for each topic which is much more precise to convey, for example, to sign Tuesday, place the right hand vertically at shoulder height with palm facing forward, make a fist and rotate it sideways. I manage to memorize the sign language for colour and day quite fast as most of them uses the first letter of the spelling as the sign. Whilst for the topic on time and family, they use similar and repetitive movements, which makes them easier to remember. Next, I take up quite a lot of time in learning to sign animals, food and beverages because not only there is a great deal of them but also, they involve many hand movements. Sometimes I get frustrated when I keep on forgetting or mixing up the signs, nevertheless, after much effort I now manage to sign my favourite food! By the end of week 2, I do a weekly zoom review with my friend.

3) Points to remember from week 1!
I need to plan my learning session well by breaking a 2-hour session into 30 minutes intervals with short breaks in between so I can stay focus and maintain motivated. As sign language relies on muscle memory, constant practice is important. I should use sign language in daily life as frequent as possible so I can remember them better. Furthermore, I need to be more patient throughout the learning process.

4) My feelings and thoughts
Even though the topics are getting tougher and more complex, it is still manageable and I am satisfied with my current progress. I am quite pleased that I can now sign various topics as well as simple daily conversation. I look forward

5) 1 good thing from what I did that I can practice now!
Now I am capable of introducing sign language to others and teach them what I have learnt!

6) Any difficulties/concern? How did you cope?
I tend to get demotivated and distracted after long hours of practice. To overcome this problem, I use Pomodoro technique so I will not need to cram everything in one go. Besides, I find it hard to sign a complete sentence as I only learn vocabulary. I try to search up Youtube videos where they sign daily situations so I can pick up slowly the correct form of grammar and sentence structure.

7) 2 words to describe elective posting so far
Challenging and interesting

8) My plan for next week (Week 3)
My plan for week 3 is to learn how to sign transportation, places, buildings, weather, religion, culture and festival.

Date: 14th August 2021

WHAT IS YOUR PROGRESS
For this week’s tasks, I have done learning the sign language for numbers, greetings and also colours.

For numbers, there are many use for it since it is one of the basic sign language. Ss example, i can use the numbers to tell when is my birthday, or what is the date for today. In the open learning itself they teach us how to read car plate number which was a combination of alphabets and numbers. Hence, i need to recap what I’ve learned last week and also this week.

There are few greetings that they taught us as example “hello”, “Assalamualaikum “, “good morning “, “how are you” and many more. Those greetings can be use in our daily life.

Another fun part is the colour. Where I found out that for colour they improvise a lil bit from the alphabet itself. Together with this post i attach together where im signing about my favourite colour. Which translated as “ saya suka warna hijau”. P/s: the sign language i learn is in Bahasa Melayu

POINTS TO REMEMBER
The numbers are quite easy to learn but it cam be quite confusing sometimes. For the greetings, for basic greetings they are quite simple but when it comes to advance greetings it needs a lot more practice therefore it’ll be easier for to memorise. Like what i told above, the colours are improvised version of the alphabet sign language but some are not. That is where the difficult part comes.

FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS
Every time i can sign something smoothly, trust me it is the best feelings ever. But i think i need to control my facial expressions when im signing because i tend to look less confident.

ONE GOOD THING THAT I CAN PRACTICE NOW
To be honest there are plenty because this week I learned quite a lot of tasks. One of it is i can sign my own date of birth.

DIFFICULTIES AND CONCERNS
For me the difficulties are always the memorising part and it is always practice! Practice! And practice!

2 WORDS TO DESCRIBE EP SO FAR
Fun and Interesting

PLAN FOR WEEK 3
To move to next topics and keep on practicing the topics that I’ve learned

We ask for their identification card when they arrive and then enter their IC number into the system to register their name. It's because I despise working with computers.

-Because I know that it is usually crowded in the morning, I prefer to work at pendaftaran in the evening because there are fewer people. Then I enlist the assistance of my friends to teach me how to use a computer. Fortunately, it was so simple.

2. How is your progress?
This week I learned some basics about colours, what i like and dislike, and how to gesture objects without having to actually spelling it.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
sign language is actually a simpler gesture rather than putting into words, and it’s important to make sure that the message is conveyed rather than focusing on the vocabulary for example. as long as the message is delivered, then it is okay. however, still need to know which comes first so that people won’t mistake the gesture for something else.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
Still excited that i am currently learning this. whenever i communicate using sign language, i always pronounce the words along with the gesture and somehow made me realise how lucky i am that i can actually say the words instead of gesturing it which sometimes consumed my energy especially when the other person doesn’t understand me.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I raise awareness by making videos and upload them on my social media. shared some basics with my friends there. happy! yay!

6.

1. name, matric number and date

Azza nur Azreen bin ahmad ryzal

A167894

10 Aug., 21

2. How is your progress?

I have just finished my HSK level 2 this week. Basically, this taught me to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Phrases that they taught me were what sports do you like, lets go out together and other simple phrases and short sentences. The best part of this course is it always repeat the same questions, so it was easier for me to remember because it helps me to recall back what I have learnt. So, in the end of this week 2 I was able to do the HSK level 2 test. It was quite hard because they mixed up all the phrases and we need to identify which one is which. The test consists of 60+ questions and I took about two and a half hours roughly to finish it. Sad and obviously, I didn’t get all correct of the answers correct. So, I was planning to redo the test next week hoping to do much better than last time. Looking forward for the next level which is HSK level 3

3. Points to remember from week 2

Learn to recognize each word so that it will be easier in reading Mandarin.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I am starting to get the hang of It after more than two weeks since I started the mandarin course. I need some time to practice my mandarin because everything seems to become much harder. I was quite afraid to continue to the next level because I haven’t fully grasped this level. Might consider redoing the HSK level 2 test and revise as much as possible. Honestly, I felt kinda sad and disappointed of myself because early this week when I started the HSK level 2 I couldn’t really remember what I have studied the previous level so need to revisit last week lessons which can be quite a time consuming. I need to take this more seriously so that it would not be a waste.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you could practice now!

Always be consistent

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

It was great. Starting to enjoy this course even though my only difficulty was time because I didn’t have much free time at home because have other works to do too. But so far so good still can keep up with my progress.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

challenging and interesting

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

My plan for next week was to split the HSK level 3 lessons into two because for this level was quite lengthy since it was the last level for completing the course. Ill do the first 10hrs of the lessons and can finish up the rest for next week. Might need some time to study back to what I have learned before answering the HSK test level 3.

Hopefully after studying HSK3 I can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in my daily, academic and professional life as a medical students and doctor to be.
