Time Devoted to Literacy Instruction

Literacy is being incorporated into most of the day. In the morning, students do an approach called Wonders ELA. This is one of the textbook programs that helps teach vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and stories. They also have guided reading ELA centers in the morning, which are small groups that alternate every fifteen minutes. My cooperating teacher teaches one of the stations, while the others are self-sufficient for the students to do independently or with their group. In the afternoon, she teaches writer's workshop, but does not always have time to teach this everyday.

The students use Portland's writer's workshop, which is very similar to Lucy Calkin's and uses strategies that reflect the Next Generation Learning Standards. While I was there, they learned about strategies including summarize, cause and effect, rereading, adding specific/descriptive details, and focusing on important details of a story using anchor texts or writing in their journals independently.

The school typically pulls out students who need further support in literacy and in math. They have two math specialists and one literacy specialist. They call the pull out programs AIS classes, Academic Intervention Support, which are math and literacy support. There is also a STEAM teacher, who teaches science, technology, engineering, art, and math, and tries to sometimes check in on classrooms and push in to assist students who need support in these areas. They arereally focused on tier 2 of RTI.

The teacher has ability grouping for literacy, so she can support learners of similar levels in each group. Her math groups, however, are mixed in levels, because she can only focus on one center during this time. She mentioned that this way, higher achieving math students can support lower achieving math students while she is not there. She has ELA centers as well, but there are less students involved because they are pulled out for AIS during this time, so its easier for the teacher to be focused all of them.

My teacher has a classroom library filled with a range of different books. They are organized by guided reading level. Each student is allowed to pick three books of their interest or choice, and she gives several books for their instructional guided reading to put into the students' own individual book bins (shown below). The books have fountas and pinnel reading levels. She also has a second section of her classroom library with books labeled by the author. She also mentioned that if she needed more books, or multiple copies of one book for the class, there is a book room in the elementary school where she can get them from.

My cooperating teacher says she does not give spelling tests.
