Bullies depend on others' misery to fill their own emotional gaps. Underneath that tough exterior, I like to think that all bullies are hurt in some way, leading them to vent negative emotions onto others who they are jealous of. Another main reason why bullies bully is because they crave the attention caused by a lack of love and guidance required by a child. They think bullying will gain them admiration from peers.
 
In some cases, the bullies are not aware that they are causing harm to their victims -- they simply think they are having fun. Therefore, in many cases communication with the bully should be considered. It could lead to a win-win situation -- both the victim and the bully walk away with a better state of mind. After all, bullies are human beings too.
