The festival signifies the victory of good over evil.
The origins of Holi come from a Hindu mythology including the popular legend of Hiranyakashyap ,a demon king who wanted to be immortal. He wanted everyone to worship him as god but his own son, Prahlada, chose to worship Vishnu instead, which offended his father. To punish his own son, asked his sister Holika, who had a magic shawl that could not catch fire, to sit on a raging fire with Prahlada in her lap.  The young lad closed his eyes and continued to chant Vishnu’s name. When the pyre was set alight, a strong gust of wind miraculously blew the magic shawl from Holika, and covered Prahlada instead. Holika was burnt to ashes. From then Holi was originated.

People sing and dance around the fire. People also perform parikrama of fire.
