Michaelson
During the war women were not thought of as fighting material. Most people thought they wouldn't be valuable or accomplish much. Despite discrimination against them the WASP's were very successful. The WASP's were the first group of women Airforce pilots. They were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The pilots faced great danger. 38 of their brave lives were lost during the war. These women pilots did not go in expecting to be great heros; they were just wanting to help the US during the war. After the war, like most veterans, they did not share much about their time in the war.

Keyly
These American heroes faced plenty of discrimination. Indian children were forbidden to speak their own languages and punished in government- and church-supported boarding schools if they did. Also, most American Indians were not legally considered citizens of the United States until 1924. Even then, some states refused to let American Indians vote until as late as the 1950s.

In World War II, the U.S. Air Force did not yet exist as a separate entity. The Army had resisted using black men as pilots but, a lawsuit lead to creating a segregated unit for them. They won 7 legions of Merit awards, 65 silver stars, 162 bronze stars for courage under fire. Tuskegee, Alabama was a good place for training pilots because it had good flying weather all year long.

Is a military award of the United States Armed Forces that is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.

Michaelson
Many hispanic citizens faced discrimination because of their ethnic background. The all Chicano infantry was ordered to cross the Rapido River and attack a German defense position. The entire company was killed in action. After the war Chicano veterans had a newfound pride in their citizenship and identity. Hispanics who served in World War II received the Distinguished Service Cross Medal but it was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor.
41st Infantry patch
